CASTLEGAR NEWS, April 14, 1982 e ' Farmers under stress Behind the facade of a ser- ene farmstead in:rural Can- ada, there Iles. a_ stressful business venture. ‘i The fact that farmers have stressful jobs often shocks other sectors of our North American society, said Dr. Olga Crocker at a -recent Ontario Ministry of Agri- culture and Food seminar in Jarvis, on the role ‘o women in the modern farm business. Dr. Crocker, chairperson of studies at Fact surprising understand marketing board trying to figure it all out. The systems, g poli- cles, i and so on, Finanelal worries cause the most stress because they create uncertainty. It used to be, said Dr, Crocker, that farmers ‘experienced the least anxiety in their 40's and 60's. But with the present recession, she'sald this is no longer true. Interpersonal and people Windsor University's busi- ness school, has done consid- erable research into farm- related stress since she be- gan studying the subject in 1978. In her session on “identi- DERMACENTOR ANDERSON! Care should be exercised to ensure removal of the head of the tick. The toxin causing paralysis has defied scientific identification. However, removal of the tick results in dramatic improvement of even severely affected individuals within a matter of hours, Although this is a new field of study, with only four or five researchers on the entire (with work associ- ates, and family members) also create 'a great deal of anxiety she said, : Work fluctuations too, can create anxieties, “City slick- ers tend to think farmers have nothing to do for six months, but not having enough to do can be just as stressful as having too much.” 5 Husbands, she said, have difficulty dealing with these fluctuations. “They are around the house all the time and they get in our hair,” she told the women. Dr. Crocker herself comes from a farming background and once owned a mixed farming operation with her husband. n .» Dr. Crocker said she has.already found that the amount of skill and knowledge, needed by farmers exceeds that needed by businessmen. The farmer, she told her audience of 110 women, has to be a jack-of-all-trades.. He has to know about farm ma- chinery, he has to be a politician, an economist and a in order to NELSON — The days of sending hired hands to fight forest fires without basic training have gone up in smoke. with the development, of training packages to be put to use this year Fire fighters Basic training course that has enough crawl space to shelter one person. The tents work by reflecting radiant heat. ~ In_.addition, all district initial attack crews will be with fire the province. The blanket program aimed at new and seasoned fire fighters is in compliance with Workers’ Compensation Board regulations requiring all fire fighters to have some training for safety's sake. Fire fighters trucked into a forest fire project in the Nelson Forest Region, . for example, will be instructed in the art of fire suppression with a crash course in things like personal safety and safety. around helicopters. Students will be tested on the core of the reading and lecture material leading to the issuance of an Emergen- cy Fire Fighters Certificate, The truckside class will be led by the immediate crew supervisor. , coveralls, Selected personnel from each district in the Nelson region have spent three days learning how to teach the contents of a series of train- ing modules designed by the protection branch. Regional birddog officer Bob Perchie schooled district protection staff in the in- struction of the basic fire suppression and fire behavior course that is the series 100 module. Subjects like fire behavior, mop-up, portable water pumps, chain saws, and sur- vival and first aid are ad- dressed by the timed lectures and audio visual aids as- signed to the module. The package comes com- plete with an instructor's outline, an audio visual aids list, films about survival, exams, ~ by the protection branch and is geared to straw bosses, ° initial attack crews and sup- pression team members with limited exposure to fire fight- ing. There will bea written test instructor's. -notes, “and a contents list. ‘The series 100 is the first’ of seven modules being built ly, they (hus- bands) notice all the things the kids have been-doing all along, and try to change them. More family conflicts result,” The off-growing season is usually the time for machin- ery repairs, another strain on the farmer. Although it is feasible for the farmer to do his own repairs, Dr. Crocker said pressures result from _ at the conclusion of each module with graduates re- ceiving wallet sized Fire Suppression Ereining ce ficates; ~~ “The course dis basic but it’s complete,” says Bob._ “The idea is to give fire fighters equal qualifications allowing for greater mobility to fire projects throughout Canada, “The training is interna- tional in scope and is a step toward standard training. External pressures. which also cause anxiety, she said, include the inability to sell the product produced, the fear that government will es- tablish policies detrimental to the farmer, and fear of losing or having to sell the One new external pressure in the last few years said Dr. Crocker, is the fear of ex- propriation. Farmers she said, have been extremely hard hit by new economic policies, Dr. Crocker spoke of ways to determine the amount of stress one experiences. “Stress,” shé said, “is the readying of the body for ac- tion,” and a certain amount of it is necessary in order for people to be motivated to get things done. Too much stress, however, can be des- tructive. Signs of this manifest themselves in physiological complications such as Anor- exia (inability ‘to eat} or ‘uncontrolled eating; insom- nia or lethargy; headaches and more, Psychological complica-- tions can develop with feel- ings of disorientation and disorganization, and fear for the sake of fear itself. Other signs show up in work sym- ptoms, such as workaholism, working below capacity, in- efficiencies on the job, or morale problems. Dr. Crocker recommended methods of' eliminating stress. In the long run, a change in one’s own self- image or one’s environment can do wonders. In the meantime certain exercises which she demonstrated, can alleviate anxieties for the moment. Positive thinking is also a long-term proposal during which she advises to “think of + failures: as ‘growing and gain~ a “ing experiences.” “Luck is really a state of mind," To cope with stress, Dr, Crocker said one must first identify what is causing it. She said it is important to set aside time for yourself to relax and think through your problems. She suggested farmers set reasonable goals for them- selves and convince them- selves of their ability to carry these goals through to com- pletion. “And of course, you're go- ing to fail. But you're going to use failure as a learning experience — and don’t get discouraged. Adversity can be overcome.” (From the Canadian Fruit- grower April, 1981) ' Up to 30% ‘on discontinued 1981 models while stock lasts A full lire of beautiful crafted upright monumen- ts, flat markers and bronze plaques. : EM¢CO R & M Memorials Ootischenia 365-3889 Alter 2:00 p.m. ONIAVS WIdads “oe jounig veg 01 J samara vo iene 0 old sefonseg ip eur elieaiunoR nO OL 'we0p ‘edoina” ‘2woD0q UejeH pur a8{no7 aor BL ED ton suns uojrduia Sngng 9 ale ot: Aono sidwos thoy uisep eiade-ueel AON SH iy Bed) “eleponeg Aop Aas 01 sud J0 MUN C1LE-9Ez Og YOI]S eeee-$9e soBeyss0D NOINN 110349 sBurans apBajisp5 1 tons) peaiwy Quipeeds ¥ }, se\dooyey we wy 18) Vewjunis w penises ‘BVGNOSUOM G.LVH OD Asonuzaune @ ‘Bn suse) 4901 © 0 Apojena eidenoe Ayueronjes * Audann ‘Adgesney aH ow pane Cupoyouy "ee a8 1040} OO} UBY) 820K 3D UYOr “ZeWnL suey (eumg ‘ager) «QI 10 VORBHUN, Ma AON ® 100° DIGMLATIO WI THOM, ioral rayoaa WvON YY WEMueTA WOId UIROA,, Byenory Avo) eeusew ce Booz. : {u) eo) san jemen rung ea.ure AL iru epoun Tia warn a more 1 Be aneed \ 90 6s pun 1isod3a wal Ava 06 eieeste Od .€L co ves9-S9e sw'd OCFOL > & shopyoy '2 Aopuns APPOINTMENTS ANYTIME.
