SS Castlegar News october 19, 1986 Pulpit & Pew By TED BRISTOW Castlegar United Church The late chief Dan George of North Vancouver, a popu- lar spokesman for the native people, once said, “Of all the teachings that we receive, this one is most important Nothing belongs to you of what there is; of what you take, you must share.” Lots of us were no doubt thinking along these lines last Sunday or Monday, at our Thanksgiving dinner. We remembered that “nothing belongs to us of what there is.” We gave thanks to the Creator for the food provided us Another has come our way since Thanks giving that agrees with the second part of this teaching: ‘of what you take, you must special day share.” Last Thursday, Oct. 16, was World Food Day. World Food Day commemorates the founding’ of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 40 years ago in Quebec City Since then the UN and many volunteer agencies have done a marvelous job of getting emergency relief to crisis areas, and, even more important, helping people to better feed themselves. All responsible agencies believe in the old adage, “Give someone a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a liftime.” Much good work has been done. But, sadly, many more years of hard work lie ahead Feeding people is not yet everyone's priority. Peter Ustinov recently commented that he had yet to see anyone on the street collecting money for nuclear arms. “Obviously,” he said, “gov ernments consider the old, the infirm, the helpless, and the wide range of human needs around the world can be left to the goodness of people's hea: It is not just governments that need to re-think their priorities. I know I can go along for days seldom think ing of the many people sur. viving on one small meal, or less, per day. World Food Day can be celebrated all year long. Here are a few suggestions: THINK about the hungry, and those who help them, every day, such as at every meal. Perhaps you might like to use this World Food Day prayer as a Grace at your meals from time to time: “God our Father, in the name of Him who gave bread to the hungry. we remember all who through our human ignorance, folly, selfishness, and sin are condemned to live in want; and we pray that all endeavours for the over coming of world poverty and hunger may be so prospered that there may be food suffi cient for all. Amen.” LEARN about the world situation, the why of hunger and the obvious ways to change things for the better. I and others have lots of literature, and book lists to help stock a library. Serious studying of what can be done is in the long run the best hope for any problem In 500 B.C. a Chinese poet wrote, “if you are thinking a year ahead, sow a seed. If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree. If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people.” | think we need to think a hundred years ahead on the hunger problem. DO what you are able right now. Tell others what are learning, to spread awareness. Contribute your money. Churches are often considered the best charities because overhead is low and motivation is high. Don't forget there is hunger right at home too. A call to the Unemployed Action Centre (365-7111) or to the Legion (they collect grocery tapes to help make food hampers, for instance) is a good place to start “Of what you take, you must share.” May God help us all to learn how to do that.” you Ministerial welcomes Pastor Warner to area By Pastor MORLEY SOLTYS The Castlegar Ministerial Association met Tuesday at the Calvary Baptist Church for its monthly meeting. The guest speaker this month was Marg MacBain who introduced the hospice program. She explained that hospice is a place to replenish the dying and those associated with the dying; a caring place for the terminally ill; a place to spend those remaining days of life in the joys of life: a place of acceptance of death as the final stage of life that should be viewed as another phase of the lifespan This place can be at home, with supportive care by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and volunteers, so that terminally ill and frail elderly people, and their families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation that is satisfying to them. Castlegar Hospice Society has trained volunteers ready to help those who need as sistance, as well as a sick room loan cupboard stocked with equipment which may be borrowed at no charge This loan cupboard is in the Red Cross room in the Sand. man Inn, and is staffed by volunteers every afternoon, froin 1 - 4 p.m. Monday to Friday Business continued with the film series being held at the Baptist church.
