being released from hospital Thur-
sday, but the Buffalo Sabres goal-
tender who had his jugular vein cut
by a skate blade hopes to be back on

DUNEDIN, Fla. (Cp) — Lloyd Moseby, claiming
to be mentally and physically rejuvenated, aims to hit at
least 20 home runs and steal $0 bases.as the Toronto Blue
Jays new leadoff hitter

“This is my year,”” he said, “I’ve never said that to
the media — ever. I’ve never boasted about stats or
anything. But this is the year I’m going to do the things |
know I can do in baseball.

In 1988 the nine-year veteran suffered his worst
year since 1981. He hit .239, hit 10 homers and drove in
42 runs. A year earlier his average was .282, with 26
homers and 96 RBIs.

“Batting second is a very unselfish position,”’ he
said.

“Batting first, I've got control of my own destiny.

“I’ve got Kelly who’s going to protect me (during
steal. attempts) like I protected Tony for five or six years.
I'm out to score runs, to create havoc. That’s my game,
that’s the fun I get out of the game, is running.

Moseby’s 1988 season started slow, then fizzled
out. He was upset in the spring by the George Bell affair,
when asked to move to left field from centre.

But the trade to Cleveland of Willie Upshaw,
Moseby’s best friend and golfing partner, drained him.

“I didn’t have any fun last year,” Mosely said. ‘If
I'd hit .320, it would have been an abysmal year

“I didn’t have any friends. I didn’t have Willie. 1
know people don’t understand anything about that but

CAN MATCH NUMBERS

Through each of the last five seasons, Moseby
averaged 72 walks and 36 stolen bases. Hitting instruc-
tor Cito Gaston feels Moseby can duplicate those num:
bers, while maintaining his home run pace and getting
his average back above .261, his career mark

“‘Moseby has good eyes and he can still hit the ball
‘out of the park if he gets his pitch,"’ Gaston said. “He's
not going to cut his swing down so he can get a base hit
and steal second.””

The most steal attempts he’s ever made were 52, in
1985. This year, his optimistic projection is 80, with 65
stlen bases.

“Even when my back is hurting, I can still steal a
bag at will,’” he said

‘He admits he'd like to be a 30-30 man
closest in 1987, with 26 homers and 39 stolen bases —
career highs on both counts

“My goal is to score runs,” he said. ‘If I do that,
the guys behind me are going to have a good year.”*
