CasNews photos by Louis Laroche High migration credited for economic boost VANCOUVER (CP) —. Record- high migration and offshore invest- ment propped up the B.C. economy last year, provincial government statistics indicate. A record 64,236 new Tesidents set- tled in British Columbia ‘last year, two-thirds of them from other Provinces and the rest from other countries. The previous high was 59,430 in 1989. “Those migration levels are quite healthy.. And last year was abnor- mally high, extremely strong,’’ Don McRae, a statistics manager in the B.C. Finance Ministry, said. The ministry expects to mail its preliminary 1990 findings to businesses and government ministries later this week. There are signs of a potential economic slowdown, such as rising unemployment. Net migration levels are projected to fall to about 55,000 this year, said McRae. British Columbia had the second- highest number of new residents — from both other provinces and from other countries — in 1990. Ontario, with a population of 9.8 million, had the most. Finance, Ministry figures suggest British Columbia ducked the recession that hit Central Canada in 1990. Sectors such as forestry and con- struction slumped, but business im- migrants pumped millions of dollars into the B.C. economy, particularly in the Vancouver area. International immigration rose 16.6 per cent and would have been higher except for ‘ta two-month slowdown placed on the issuing of visas by the federal government,” the Finance Ministry says in its preliminary year-end report. The natural increase last year, bir- ths over deaths, was 21,370, bringing the Province *s population to nearly istry forecasts a steady in- crease in immigrants for the next several years. Hong Kong immigrants have been welcomed by some for putting money into the provinde but blamed by others for inflating real estate prices. Preliminary figures indicate people from Hong Kong accounted for about 13 per cent of new B.C. residents last year. By comparison, 22 per cent came from Ontario and 19 per cent from Alberta. Pulpit continued from 83 cities, nations and even entire con- tinents. John Knox was one such person. Because of this man's Prayers and positive steps of action, a spiritual revolution began in the hearts of people. This man’s prayers were recorded in the history books. Queen Mary, who was the queen of Scotland at that time, said she was more scared of the prayers of John Knox than all the armies of France and Britain. He was willing to make the difference. He prayed, ‘‘Give me Scotland or I die.”’ Stop waiting for somebody else to do what you think needs to be done. Step out and risk. Get out on the limb, that’s where the adventure is. That’s where the fruit is. I want to encourage you to release God's power by blessing others. Maybe you are busy, active, or even weary. But the scripture says, “Be not weary in well doing.”’ (2 Thess. 3:13) We need to stay rejuvenated in our service to God. We need to see our service as a blessing, and as we bless, it will renew our spirit, mind and body. Mental illness or depression will often cause someone to sit and stare. Some of God’s people have lapsed into a similar state. Mental health, on the other hand, is ex- Pressed in an active life. Stir up the gift of God that is in you and begin to bless those around you. Do it because the Word of God commands you to. Do it because the most effective path to a blessed life is blessing others. Blessing is con- tagious. Because God has blessed us, we can bless others. 365-3517.
