The free milling process in the opera- tion of bringing the particles of gold or silver that may be covtsined in ore in contact with mercury and forming an amalgam cf thee metals, which is ai- terward reparated by straining or re- torting. The operation is as foliows: The ore is crushed in batteries or crush- erg. Agitig crashed a stream of water js turned on it ia such a way as to wash ail finely pulverized particles through a screen, the coarser particles lremaining till they are crushed Gne enough to pass through a screen of a required degree of enesz. As the finely crushed ore leayes the screen it is carried by the flow: of water over a copper plate which is about three feet wide and seven feet lorg and coated with mercury. The copper plate is first pisted with silver and then coated over with mer- lcury, the mercary adheres much better ‘to silver than to copper, hence the silver plating. As the particles ot gold are carried over the plate they are brought. in contact with the mercury, owng to greater weight, aud stick toi, forming an amalgam, which is removed from the plate by means of a scraper made of rubber, wood or iron. Tron is used only when the amalgan has become so hard that it cannot be re- moved with oft scrapers, as iron scratches the plates and causes the amalgam to become uneven. The amal- gam, when removed, is usually of the consistence of 1ce cream. ,.@.,% semi- solid. The gold or silver is separated irom it by straining or retorting. or by a combination of both. lowe: For a plate 15 in. wide, 1 5-16 in. te foot When the gold in ore is very aneven, that is very coarse and very fine, a coin- bination of the ama'gamation and cyan- ide processes is employed by first pass- ing the crushed ore over plates to col- lect all the the coarser particles, and ent action of the cyanide process. The very fine particles will not amalgate on plates. PAN AMALGAMATION PEOCESS. The pan amalgamation process is in principle the eame as the plate amalza- tion process, but is performed ina dif- ferent way. The ore being rushed and run into a large vat, shaped something iike a waeh tab, in the bottom of which is a layer of mercury from one to three inches in depth, and 1s provided with a stirrer something like that of an ice leream ‘freezer. “/hen the proper amount of water and crushed ore has been runinto the vat the current of water is turned off and the stirrer (or \ more properly, the amalgamating shoes) \are started to rotate, which rotary mo- | When the amalgamation is completed, a plug in the side ofthe vat just above the mercury is drawn. The water and crushed ore runs out through a waste pipe to the dump. In this operation the gold and silver are brought in contact with the mercury by agitation the mercury gold and- silver, are separated the same as in the plate amalgamation process. . W. P.
