Official officer for the referendum vote, Peter Ozeroff, d the i moming stating that a total of 856 people voted. Of these, 379 said yes and 461 said no—16 ballots were rejected. “I'm disappointed,” said coun- cillor Lawrence Chernoff, “(City officials) worked hard on this and tried to do some long term plan- ning.” If passed, the referendum would have allowed the city to undergo a ie ier “This was such an important issue, I can’t stress it enough. You would think more people would have showed up to vote one way or another,” Chemoff said. According to statistics there are 43717 eligible voters in Castlegar. The fact that only 20 per cent of these felt it was necessary to vote, has left a strong taste of voter apa- thy in Chemoff’s mouth. ‘The defeat of the referendum he says, will set Castlegar back both time-wise and in funding. “We've been set back two years for sure, possibly more.
