Young crime stoppers, Kelvin Bezaire, Brad Mal- off, Travis Bush, Char- maine Garay, Keith Kerekes, and Jamie Ross did just that on Shadow Day, April 20. When asked why he roast this particular occepesion to shadow, Keithommented, “I wanted to explore police work further. It would be an interesting job; always working with different people and crimes.” Castlegar RCMP, Constable Stef- fan Hess, found many benifits from Shadow Day. “It helps people decide what they want to do down the road.” “It’s different than learning from the textbook.” So, what do the students like most about the job? “The radar gun!” said Keith. All the students got the. oppor- tunity to patrol the city in a police car. Unfortunately, no high speed chases. One thing that the students learned was an unexpected amount of paper- work. Mark Williams, another local constable said; “Sixty per cent of our job is paperwork, everything is writ- ten; it’s essential.” In all, Stanley Humphries stu- dents enjoyed the opportunity to work with RCMP and are definitely West’s Department Store Westinghouse, Fabric Department Clerk at "s Department Store, said that she would be more than willing to give reference for future employment for her Large Elizabeth Duarte. Shadow Day was formed to help Stanley Humphries students look up on a career which they might have later in life. Having all students shadow a business of their choice gives the city some great community spirit. Mrs. Verna Chemoff, a teach- er at the high school, made this day possible by having students fill out forms and papers to decide what we all wanted to be for the day. A lot of Mrs. Chemoff’s time and effort went into the day, and the students appre- ciate her for her work and support. Tamara Terry About learning . employment. So what's ‘Shadow Day’ all about? According to Verna Chernoff, the Career Education Coordinator at Stanley Humphries Sec- ondary School, “Shadow Day is a chance for the grade 10 students to experi- ence on-the-job training in a ‘business of their choice.” On April 20, 169 stu- dents went to a whopping 92 businesses to study their ‘employer’ in action during pecans work- implemented by other school districts which report that as a direct result of shadow day 25 per cent of the students who Participated got summer hadn't been contacted.
