A. Houseman ‘A Shopshire Lad’ What a flurry of “friendings” we have had recently — friends suddenly appearing, friends cele- brating, friends retiring, friends leaving for other places and for different reasons and all with so* much to offer. It began when we met two “Heritage” friends just returning home to Prince Rupert from a conference in Cranbrook who agreed to stop for an overnight visit. Steve is a post-war Hungari- an refugee, his wife Margeret, a Canadian and one of the first to graduate from the new University of the North, a ceremony at which she also had tea with the Queen. Steve is doing a translation of a book of reminiscences by surviv- ing airmen of the Royal Hungari- an Air Force. Never heard of it? Neither had I. The Hungarians had been the not-too-willing allies of Nazi Germany during the last war and, greatly outnumbered, they fought against the Americans using German-made aircraft. I read two chapters of translation and was fascinated. These are sto- ries of air battles fought with great gallantry on both sides against great odds and using mod- em planes and weapons, but they read like tales of medieval chival- ry. A fascinating small window on one small, crazy corner of a world-wide conflict. I can hardly wait for the book. Our second all-too-brief visitor was Alex Lutz, former city works foreman and even earlier Her- itage ramrod. He was widowed last year and is now married to Betty Price, also a long time friend, pupil and staff member of City Hall. Eighty years old, full of beans, busy as ever, he sends greetings to all his many friends and makes me green with envy. My very best to Betty. A few days after Alex's visit I flew to Westminster Abbey to take part in a Golden Ordination The Castlegar Sun Anniversary celebration for Very Reverend Father Wilfrid Sower- by's fifty years of priesthood | OVER MY Now Prior of the monastery, Father Wilfrid had been my ighbor as well-as my cl: in high school for five years. After graduation we had lost con- tact. Thirteen years ago I met him again and since that time I have been a volunteer teacher at the seminary. He has made this ser- vice @ particular pleasure and | was honoured by the invitation, Friends can do that. On my return, we went to the Colander Restaurant in Trail for Italian dinner and ran into a Tup- per family reunion. Many of the three dozen guests had been my or Bunny’s pupils in high school So it was a special pleasure to See so many smiling faces and I was happy. Friends can do that for one, too. Sandy Spence-Daly, one of the guest and a long time friend and former pupil who alleges that I had bullied and cajoled her through high school and psychi- atric nursing. She agreed to come to our house for lunch with some members of her family, “to catch up with details of long absence”. There were too many details of long absence, but there was much laughter and many wonderful, amusing and occasionally scary Stories about the life of Canadian peacekeeping forces in a dozen Countries overseas, and life on the oil rigs off the north coast of Scotland. Her sons have inherited their mother’s slightly zany sense of humour and love of a story. Parks spokesman Gord McAdams said “we have regis- tered 12,854 camping parties to the end of June which is a 14 per cent increase over the 11,307 parties registered during the same time last year. Also we are up 7 per cent in day use to 106,363 parties recorded and up | per cent in ovr marine sites to 766 boats recorded. Largest increase in use are occurring in the Revelstoke to during the week, they are usually full for the weekend by 5 p.m. on Friday. “We recommend that campers register in a site as early as possi- ble although we will try to accommodate you in our over- flow area or in a nearby private site if possible. Kokanee Creek Park is especially busy and oy) mony in Trail, reception in Castlegar. The former was solemn and dignified, joyful and colourful as all proper wedding should be; the latter, replete with good food and drink, good con pany, music and merryment, as proper receptions should be. It was good to be welcomed’ as spe- cial guests by principals Iver and Marlene, as well as by Joyce and Odd, Joan, Bjorme and Linda and other former pupils’ their chil- dren and grandchildren; fun to be lightly sauteed during the good natured roastings and toasting ($) speeches, amused and touched by the stories of student days—some long forgotten, some half forgot fen and some belitedly revealipg unanswered long-ago questions. Interspersed with all of these activities were the retirement par ties, beacons of change, for staff at Stanley Humphries, J. It contained olive oll, beeswax, water and rose petals. The evaporation of the water from the skin results in a cooling effect, hence the name ‘cold cream’. Even with the variety of creams available today, the formula hasnt changed too much.
