Learning how to land a job in today’s tight market is almost as important as getting the education in the first place, students and educators say. “Correct deportment and manners can hurry promo- tions,” said James Strachan, assistant dean of under- graduates at the university's Weatherhead School of Management. “What distinguishes the up-and-comer is his ability to handle himself in a country club.” more time at the symphony, ballet and theatre, she said, in part because corporations 80 much support to cultural institutions. fa “We will one day be expected to serve on the boards of cultural organizations,” Mutter said. (AP) — Lee Iacocca has seored his share of public relations coups, but he chuckles about the latest one because it fell into his lap. “I could have made the same -mistake, right? But I didn’t,” the Chrysler Corp. chairman said of the furor over multimillion-dollar salaries and bonuses paid his counter. parts at General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. GM gave $1.5 million in 1983 salary and bonuses to chairman Roger Smith; Ford gave chairman Philip Caldwell $1.4 million, Chrysler had money too, but no bonus plan for executives — it expired in the dark years of the company’s brush with bankruptcy. Chrysler made a record $701 million in 1983 and could triple that this year. Iacocca got a handsome salary — $476,000 — but no bonus. By criticizing the paycheques of his counterparts, Iacocca may have scored points with Americans disgusted by the bonuses, polishing a public image that has prompted mention of him as a possible national political candidate. BONUSES TOO HIGH “They were too high,” Iacocca said of the bonuses in an interview in his office at Chrysler headquarters. At the company’s annual sharebolder meeting three weeks ago, $51.6 million was set aside for bonuses for 1,436 top Chrysler executives. But who gets how much will not be decided until later this year. As a Ford executive, Iacocca scored the industry's media coup of the decade by getting himself and the new Mustang on the covers of Time and Newsweek on the same day — April 17, 1964. He became a folk hero 15 years later as Chrysler's savior. At age 59, with 35 years in the car business, he has become one of the best-known American business leaders. As Chrysler has become healthier, Iacocca’s speeches have turned to the U.S. economy and what he sees as its keystone, the domestic auto industry. He criticizes President Reagan for what he sees as a huge problem threatening the economy — budget deficits caused by undisciplined spending. OUT OF HAND “It's getting out of hand,” he said. “When you have a deficit of 200 (billion dollars) and your defence budget is 300, you're keeping the economy going by borrowing money and turning it over to(Defence Seeretary-Caspar) Weinberger to spend. And it’s not produetive. It doesn’t do anything. It doesn't provide a service.” Some Iacocca watchers say he sounds like he is running for office, perhaps as Walter Mondale’s vice-presidential running mate. Iacocca insists he is not interested. “I wouldn't want to try it down there,” he said. “I've had enough trouble here. Whether it’s Reagan or Mondale, the morning after the election, whoever's got it ain't got himself a plum because there are some bullets to bite. A lot of them.” Another major problem facing the U.S. economy, Iacocea says, is American attitudes toward the Japanese. Gas sales key to dollar — Lougheed TORONTO (CP) — The quickest way to improve for the Canadian dollar, thus helping to improve its value. As he sees it, the U.S. auto industry, which long has supported the basic steel, glass, rubber and textile indus- tries, also helps prop up growing high-technology compaii- ies. Replace American cars with more Japanese-made cars, and the whole system goes down. Iacocca says it could happen overnight. Iacocca says he will remain at Qhrysler for about another three years. He took a token $1-a-year salary after joining the company more than five years ago but has since been paid millions in salary and stock. But never a bonus. Not yet. sees nothing in Canada's that wauld lead to a repeat of the 20-per-cent or more interest rates suffered in mid-1961. Bouey conceded that a de- cline in the value of the dollar can stimulate exports and help domestic industries that must compete with imports. But he warned “that sti- mulus exists only as long as Canadians accept the higher prices without demanding compensating increases in their wages, salaries and other prices. “If Canadian costs do rise, tries to rely too. much on monetary policy, rather than to reduce the U.S. deficit worsens the situation, he said. CASTLEGAR NEWS For Your Cartier Pacific Western the cost of raisin family., All the 2 way Canada's sagging dollar without raising interest rates is to sell more natural gas to the United States by de- creasing export prices, says Alberta Premier Peter Lou- gheed. Lougheed and a number of economists say gas exports might be the only trump card Canada can play to stave off the grim choice of putting up with higher interest rates or allowing a disastrous tumble in the dollar's value. On Monday, the dollar hit a record low of 76.14 cents U.S. on foreign exchange markets. Lougheed said lower nat- ural gas prices would in- crease sales in the U.S., earning more U.S. dollars for Canada. Converting the U.S. dol- lars would increase demand “The one and only big commodity which can enable Canada to earn a great deal more foreign currency is nat- ural gas,” said Lougheed, who was in Toronto Monday to attend a reunion of his Harvard University class- mates. Natural gas was Canada’s° third-largest export item last year, after crude oil and oil products and forestry. But oil exports will remain the same in 1984 and forestry products sales wfll be hurt by higher interest rates in the U.S. and fewer housing starts. Gas exports totalled $3.9 billion fast year down from $4.75 billion in 1982. Lower sales were blamed on Can- ada's single border-export HOMEGOODS FURNITURE WAREHOUSE travel with an adult cy the children with you — Pacific Western makes it all possible with this super eco- nomical special fare!
