Dealer 5012 September 14, 1988 Castlégar News Cc] Car dealers change sales pitch to women customers By TONY VAN ALPHEN TORONTO (CP) — About seven years ago, when Suzanne Sylvestre dropped into an auto showroom the salesman would zero in on colors and styling. { He'd leave his pitch about what was under the hood for male customer: “I was insulted,” says Sylvestre of Hanmer, Ont., near Sudbury. “They assumed a woman didn't know anything else about a car or didn't care.” Not any more. A month ago, Sylvestre started popping in to local dealers for another car and noticed sales staff had undergone an overhaul. Liposuction p OTTAWA (CP) — More Canadians are taking their dreams of a re- modelled face and body to cosmetic surgeons, with the young and men boosting patient rolls that once were monopolized by middle-aged women. A Toronto plastic surgeon, whose downtown practice is 80 per cent cosmetic surgery, said the desire for nose jobs, eyelid tucks, breast im- plants, tummy tucks and fat removal is no longer confined to entertainers, models and matrons. “In the last five years, cosmetic surgery has become much more socially acceptable,” said Robert Stubbs. “Now, it’s almost like ortho- dontics. You don't have to live with an appearance you're not satisfied with.” Trends in the United States, where more than one million Ameri- cans have some kind of cosmetic surgery each year, are showing up in Canada. Among those trends are an increasing demand for body sculp- ture surgery, which includes breast augmentation or reduction and re- moval of fat from thighs, abdomen and buttocks. “Liposuction is the No. 1 procedure with about 150,000 done in North American annually,” Stubbs said. There have been 11 deaths in the They don't gloss over the nuts and bolts of a car with her. Gone were the quick sendoffs to a corner-so she could leaf through color sample books while the salesman talked turkey with her husband. No wonder. All over North America, women are making more money and buying more cars. Sales studies by Maritz Research of Detroit show that in the last decade, women have doubled their share of the Canadian market to 40 per cent, or about 400,000 new car purchases in 1987. In the last five years, women have boosted their share of the truck market from six to 15 per cent. “Women in Canada bought more opular than $6 billion worth of new cars and Ford Canada. trucks in 1987 and that's a buying What's more, if a woman comes in force to be reckoned with,” said Jack with her husband, she's likely to be Clissold, vice-president of sales and the deciding factor in making a deal, marketing for Ford Canada. studies show, BECOMES POPULAR “T've got a survey here that shows Some models, such as Nissan's 86 per cent of women make the Pulsar sports coupe, were more decision,” says Ron Masciangelo, popular with women than men in sales manager at Mazzuca Motors, 1986. who sold Sylvestre a mini-van. Stubbs said, for example, that “an ear,-nose ahd throat doctor can go down to New Orleans for a weekend crash course in breast augmentation, come back with a fancy little diploma and people think he's a plastie sur- geon.” People interested in the proce- dures should be asking questions about the physician's training and where the doetor has hospital priv- ileges.
