VANCOUVER (CP) — The Fraser River Connee
tion offers a dip into British Columbia history and a
unique view of one of the world’s great waterways.

A comfortable 40-passenger cruiser makes the
connection between the bustling new waterfront of
New Westminster and the quiet, tree-lined maturity
of Fort Langley

In between is more than three hours of relaxed
cruising through a colorful-world of floating homes.
fishermen, tugboats, bridges, mountain scenery and
wildlife.

For cruise operators Doug and Helga Leaney
the venture that began last month was the result of a
10-year love affair with the Fraser

“We started exploring the big river with our
small powerboat and kept finding fascinating places
and historical connections,"*

“Then we started saying to each other
‘Wouldn't it be nice to show other people how the
river really looks’ — and here we are."’

The 13-metre launch, powered by three 16S:
horsepower Volvo engines, makes three round trips
each day between Westminster Quay Public Market
and the private dock of the Bedord House restaurant

Passengers can begin at either end and arrange
stop-overs ranging from a half hour to about six
hours.

Here is the tale of one such voyage from Fort
Langley

LEVEL DROPS

The Fraser River Connection casts off and heads
up Bedford Channel to round McMillan Island, later
the water level will drop enough for the launch to go
down the channel and under the bridge

The relatively tall buildings of Haney loom to
the north. Another connection is planned here, says
the skipper, so passengers can board near Haney
House, with its historic Billy Miner Pub

Derby Reach Regional Park unfolds portside —
along the south bank — full of campers, picnickers
and bar-fishers

Next. same side, are the bizarrely attractive
floating homes of Grants Landing, looking a little like
the set for a Popeye movie — there's even one
shaped like a shoe

A kilometre further down the river and it's all
business on the starboard side (north), with the big
sawmills of Hammond, followed by a long line of
pleasant houses

As the launch cruises into sight of busy New
Westminster Harbor, there's a dazzling, duck’s-eye
view of contrasting bridges. The high and mighty
Port Mann, a’ low and little ‘railway bridge, the
stodgy old Patullo and the clean, soaririg lines of the
new Skytrain span

Pulling up to busy Westminster Quay is
reminiscent of the Thames cruise to Greenwich, with
hundreds of people trolling. shopping, dining,
drinking or just watching the river roll by

There’s time for a lesurely pint at the
Paddlewheeler Pub,.and then back aboard for the
return to Fort Langley. Coffee and snacks are
available on the cruise

Fort Langley’s attractions include the national
historic park itself, plus the Langley Centennial
Museum and National Exhibition Centre, B.C. Farm
Machinery and Agricultural Museum \and assorted
dining facilities

to implant genes

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -
Sciéntists in Rome have discovered a
powertul new means of transplanting
foreign genes into animals by using
sperm to introduce them into the body,
saysa journal report

Dr. C. Spadatora and his colleagues
at the Institute of _ Biomedical
lechnology reported that mouse
sperm cells incubated with a solution
ot closed DNA could capture foreign
DNA molecules.

In the experiment, these sper
matozoa were then used to fertilize
mouse eggs in vitro, and it was tound
that the newly born mice had incor

porated the foreign DNA into their
genetic material, the doctors wrote in
the June issue of Cell

Researchers said 30 per cent of 250
mice showed evidence tor the presence
ot the loreign DNA, an essential com
ponent of all living matter that con
lains the body’s genetic code and tran:
smits its hereditary pattern
