Upon the arrival of the steamer Koot-
enay here this morning at7 a. m. cor-
respondent went straightway to the tel-
egraph office and learned that the United
States had declared war with Spain.
There was but one expression among the

The Steamer Rossland.

The new steamer Rossland ia lying at
the dock here receiving her finishing
touches, She is a beauty and will be
the swiftest atern-wheeler on the Pacific
coast. Captain Short of the Kootenay
showed your correspondent through the
new boat. She 1s 180 feet long and 28
feet beam. Itis calculeted that she will
easily make around trip between Arrow-
head and Robson every day, a distance
6f 240 miles. She” made ‘a ‘three-hour
trial run with 120 pounds of steam and
averaged 20 miles an hour.

Captain Troup, who designed the
boat, says ‘she can make 22 miles an
hour with full steam on, which is 160
pounds. She will carry only passengers,
baggage, exprees and the mails. She
will gointo service in about three weeks.
She is capable of carrying 180 tons.

She is provided with the latest and
most improved machinery. Her two en-
gines have an 8-foat stroke and 24-inch
bore cylinders. Theelectric plant is the
beat. Every room on the bo.t is provi-
ded with electric light. There are 26
handsomely decorated state rooms, and
the saloon and office. The ‘Texas’. or
third deck is composed of 11 rooms for
the officers. She is finished in cherry.

Frazier valley was about one hour’s ride

last year the Columbia river was frozen
solid, and the boats had to pass throngh
a narrow channel cut in the ice. This
year it is different, there only being

Mr. W. H. Alldridge, the C. P. R.|
representative, is busily engaged at the
Trail smelter taking stock and getting a
general knowledge of the immense plant
and its many connections. It will prob-
ably be a week or more before his pres-
ent labors are‘completed, when he will
be prepared no doubt to announce to the
anxious public when the smelter will

; The regular meeting of the city coun-
cil was held last night but owing to the
absence of the members who are in Vic-
toria and Spokane only four were ‘pres-
ent. |

On motion of Ald. Goodeve, Ald. La-
londe was called to the chair to act-as
mayor protem in the absence of Mayor
Wallace. The propesed action in regard

ter. It waa finally learned that it was a
washout, When daylight came we found
we were six miles weat of Spencer's
Bridge and two miles from the stide.

There was no dining car with the
train, so the passengers began to cast
about to cee what chances there were
for breakfast. There was a veat log cabin
near by. Your correspondent made a
talk for something to eat. The hired
girl, as we afterwards learned, demurred
but after due persuasion yielded, and
said if we would stand outside she would
get something fora few of us. In about
half an hour six of us were invited in,

said the bread and -utter and tea was

That Successful Mission.

Editor Record:—In thie morning’s
Miner I read an article headed ‘A Suc-
cessful Mission,” and over the signature
of our worthy mayor it was made to ap-
pear that the needs of Rossland had to
be forced on the government almost by
threats before they would grant appro-
priations for this district.

Now as x friend of the government I
must protest against such an insinuation
going abroad without a challenge.

I ask the question, has not the govern-
ment met the wishes of our people in
every reasonable request that has been
made? When we consider how quickly
Rossland haa grown and the great de-
mands on the government caused there-
by, with no appropriation to meet the
neceasary Outlay, I claim that our mini-
sters have done their best to keep pace
with the growth of the city. AndI know
they were prepared to act in a most lib-
eral manner with this district, even if
nodelegation had gone to Victoria.

Forks last night.

Lawler’s Good Luck.

Mr. Lawler, the well-known mining
man who is interested in the Big Four
group of claims, three-quarters of a mile
from town on the Red mountain road,
west of the St. Paul, reports a strike in
the workings of his property. Today he
obtained an assay made by H. E. D.
Merry giving the following values: Gold,
$741.60; silver, 13.75 ounces, and 7.8
per cent copper.

The claims in this group are the Dou-
ble Fraction, Big Bend, Aetna Fraction,
and Big Eour. The above assay was
from ore at a depth of fourteen feet. He
says the vein is 20 inchea.
