CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, February 19, 1976 . Second Consecutive Year for Selkirk Saints pécond “onsecutive Year vor setkirk saints College Hockey Champs Selkirk’s two wins during .the weekend have resulted in the team's advancement to the 4-West Champlonships in Win- nipeg in March where they will represent B.C, colleges against the three other Western Cana- dian provinces, The Totem Championship means the Saints can keep the “Andy Soles Totem Hockey Trophy” at home for another year where it originated and hopefully will stay awhile.* Weekend game results were: Friday—Selkirk Saints 10 vs, BC.1.T. Cougars 2; Satur- day—Cariboo College Chiefs & vs. B.C.LT. Cougars 5; Sunday —Selkirk Saints 6 va, Ceriboo College Chiefs 4, In the weekend opener, the host Saints downed B.C.LT.'s club from Burnaby, 10 - 2. Period scores were 2-0, 6-1, and 10-2 and B.C.LT. took 6 minors to Selkirk's 6. Steve Knebel and Mike Matson scored for Burnaby while Bruce Allingham, Dave Costanzo each scored a pair for Selkirk along with singles from ‘ Baines, Tremblay, Grigg and Hyssop, The second game was by far the toughest battle between two clubs as elimination from contention was a possibility. Cariboo started scoring and led 3-1 after one period. B.C.LT. fought back in the second to go ahead 4-3 and kept things close in the third period before the Chiefs hustled back for 4 unanswered third period goals; The Championship game was a come from behind victory for the Saints, Cariboo dropped behind 2.0 after one period, but came back and made it 4-2 during the second stanza. Four goals by Selkirk in the third gave them the well-earned victory and a berth in the Western Canadian Champion- ships in Winnipeg. Selkirk goals in the game were scored by Beauchamp (2), Dale Costanzo, Wayne Kinakin, Glenn Grigg and Bob Howe. This weekend Selkirk trav- els to Kamloops to attend the Second Annual Molson’s Invita- tonal Hockey Tournament. The ~ Saints are defending their title which they earned last year by defeating all comers including Algonquin Cats of Ottawa, University of Alaska, several Alberta and B.C. Colleges. This year there are fewer teams but the action should be very exciting. Attending this year's tournament will be: — Selkirk College Saints— Castlegar, Cariboo College Chiefs—Kamloops, St, Clair Saints—Quebec, Algonquin Cats—Ontario, Red Deer Col- lege—Alberta, Mount Royal College—Alberta, Vancouver 25-LB, DOLLY VARDEN was caught by Earl Mohn of Castlegar on Tuesday of last week at Sawmill Bay on Kootenay Lake. Six rinks went over there this morning, Monday, at the invita- tion of the Nelson curlers and I know from ‘experience they have been having a real friend- ly time. 1 was all set to be one of them but that old devil flu got me down and I had to stay home. Cecil Bradford kindly filled’ in for me at the last moment but I sure wish I could have been there. I am hoping that I will get some results from the meeting before turn- ing this in. The third round robin is now well under way but it is still too early to say that there isa trend in the play. Thave just had a phone call from Nelson and I'm afraid the experience of the Nelson club proved too much for our boys. The final standing shows that Nelson won three, tied two and lost one. However, my informant spoke very highly about the Bosketball Team Undefeated in Tourney Saints Interior Champs Selkirk Saints finished the Interior Basketball season with an undefeated tournament in Kamloops over the weekend. They defeated the host Cariboo College Chiefs 66-53, Okanagan College 58-47 and College of New Caledonia 81-33. The opening game saw Cariboo take a 31-29 half-time lead before ‘Selkirk bounded back for the victory. The Saints now travel to $200 Reward Goes to East Kootenay Men The East Kootenay sports- men wero awarded $200 each recently for the part thoy played in bringing an illegal hunter to justice. The charge was possession of game during the closed season and resulted in a fine of $100 and o withdrawal of hunting pri- vileges for the accused, The sportsmen, who gave up five days of their time while gathering cvidence, were re- warded leading to conviction of persons doing wanton damage to wildlife, wildlife habitat, or private property while hunting. Nelson terrific hospitality and excel- lent spirit of friendliness, off the ice, shown by the host club. Tentative arrangements are being made for a return visit and I will have more about that * in future columns, Trail has also surfaced again into the inter-club picture and has invited up to eight rinks of our boys to visit them on Monday afternoon, March 1. This is the bare bones of the deal and again I will have more to say about it in the future, Claude Bissell was to have been Percy Brown's fourth man but, on advice from his doctor, Claude has decided to forego his curling activities for the _ balance of the season.” He assures me that there is nothing serious the matter and we are glad of that. The boys will miss you Claude, especially Pete on the way to Kelowna, He will have to find other ways of staying awake but then; being baptized once should be enough for any man. Don’t you agree, Claude? See you on the ice. A New Golf Cart for That Thirsty Golfer A golf cart attachment has been designed and patented (Canadian Patent no. 966,454) by J.
