TORONTO (CP) — Clare Marcus will never forget the day the elderly woman knocked at the door of her hotel room in Wales and = 7 walked in. At that moment Marcus saw her mother for the first time in 50 years. “You know, I liked her right away,” Marcus says. “As soon as I saw her, she just seemed the kind of per- son my mother would be.” Adopted in infancy, Mar- cus, now 57, had been search- ing for her mother most of her adult life. That reunion five years ago in Wales convinced her that adult adoptees have the right to know who their birth parents are. Her new book, Who Is My Mother?, looks at adoption from that controversial per- spective. She tells her own story as well as those of many adop- tive parents, birth parents and adoptees. Since 1920, there have been about 500,000 legal adoptions in Canada and a recent survey found there now are about 400,000 Can- adian adoptees. When Marcus was 16, her stepmother screamed during an argu- ment, “you don’t know what a mother is. You were picked up out of the gutter where she left you.” Soon after that, Marcus's father died and she left home.
