bitter Edmund Dantes in The

“Paine was hard to be
around physically,” Thomas
says. “He was a misfit, a
rambunctious and raucous
man whose ideas everybody
wanted to have but whose
company nobody could take,”
said Thomas, expounding on
his fascination with Citizen
Tom Paine.

“This is a play into which a
man has poured his heart and
soul,” says Thomas, referring
to Fast, who went to jail in
the early 1950s for refusing
before a congressional com-
mittee to disclose names of
contributors to a Spanish
Republican cause.

Paine is a true anti-hero in
that he never became a
politican and always rem
ained a revolutionary. It was
one reason he was shunted
off and neglected after the
war was over.

“Paine spoke with the
voice of the people, not with a
polistied, literary rhetoric.
His job was to incite, support
and continue to feed the
flame of the popular revolu
tion. People could under.
stand what he wrote. Com
mon Sense was the most
published book in America
outside of the Bible.”

PLAYS PAINE

Thomas first played Paine
last summer in a 99-seat
theatre at the Williamstown
Theatre Festival in Massa
chusetts. He has been willing
to go anywhere for a good
role.

“We were on tour all
the time. I grew up back

charges

NEWARK, N.J. (REUT.
ER) — Victoria Sellers, the
actress daughter of the late
British comedian Peter Sell-
ers, has been released on
$100,000 U.S. bond after her
surrender to authorities in
New Jersey to face charges
that she was part of ani inter.

The 20-year-old actress
surrendered Friday and was
released on ‘bond the same

Sellers, whose mother is
actress Britt Ekland, was
charged along with her boy-
friend, Hollywood talent
scout Reed Wallace, and four
others with being a member
of a drug ring that sold $1
million U.S. worth of cocaine
per week in Los Angeles.

She was said to be talking

with Korean firm

Cominco Engineering Ser-
vices Ltd. (CESL) has signed
an agreement with the Kor-
ean Zine Company Ltd. of
Seoul, South Korea for the
sale of Cominco’s gypsum re-
moval technology.

from feed solution in Korean
Zine’s expanded smelter at
Onsan, South Korea.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The polka has beer
barrelled its way out of the ethnic enclaves in whic it has
spent the last 50 years and is heading for the big time.

Not all the beautiful people are bouncing to the beat,
but singer David Byrne of the rock group Talking Heads
was spotted in the audience at a packed polka show in
Hollywood last month, and a San Francisco polka band
that was started as a joke is all the rage in the city by the
bay

The energetic ethnic two-step is even drawing the
interest of those in the know. On Feb. 25, the U.S.
National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences
presented a Grammy award for the first time to the best
polka album of the year. It went to polka veteran Frankie
Yankovic for his 70 Years of Hits.

Polka had its origins as a village folk dance in
Bohemia, now an area of Czechoslovakia. In the 1800s, it

The dance waltzed its way to North America with
waves of immigrants from Central Europe, and as they
melted in the pot, polka evaporated, except for weddings
and parties in areas with strong ties to the old country

STARTS AS JOKE

But these days, a band called Polkacide is one of the
hottest night club acts in northern California, even
though it was started as a joke by a group of San
Francisco Art Institute students.

“It's happy. gutsy music; even in the traditional
bands, people dress crazy and really let loose,” said Ward
Abronski, saxophonist and leader of Polkacide

On stage, the lively 15member group wears
lederhosen, Naugahosen, mismatched plaid suits and
hospital gowns.

“We do Czech and Polish rather than German
polkas,” said Abronski, the only Pole in the bunch.
“Standards such as: Beer Barrel Polka, Who Stole the
Keeshka? and In Heaven There Is No Beer.”

Drummer Hayok Kay is a Korean.

So far, Polkacide has been popular wherever it has
played, said Kay, except for a gig at the Miss Nude
America Pageant in August

“The crowd was in no mood for polka,” she said. “The
fleet was in, there were several intermissions and the
audience was getting mad. Finally they put us on stage
and we got through the first tune before the promoter
dropped the curtain on us.”
