It was just an animated trip in a 100-minute movie called Sinterklaas Fantasy in which the campaigning Social Credit leader stars. He calls it a documen tary about a young Dutch boy who “came here and did reasonably OK in bus- iness and did reasonably OK in polities ... and then cian and his wife, Lillian, who has a bit part, were working on the movie in February and March and “T’ve just reached the part now where through trick photography I'm travelling by way of a rainbow and landing in a canal in Am- sterdam. “Just as I was about to get on the rainbow, (for- mer) premier Bill Bennett decided to end the movie at y he is about his younger days in Holland. So we have all of that on film.” The storyline closely fol- lows Vander Zalm's own life. He came to Canada when he was 12 to join his father, a tulip-bulb sales. man. - The 52-year-old politi that has so far been filmed only at Lillian’s Fantasy Gardens — a tourist at traction in the Vancouver suburb of Richmond. He said the Social Credit government made an ap palling decision to study pri vate gambling in B.C. and XN called on other civic and pro vineial politicians to speak \3 Lars out on the issue. wens ene Premier Bill Vander Zalm has said he would give serious consideration to per manent casinos in resort towns like Whistler and Bar kerville. and Attorney-Gen eral Brian Smith said last month that government-run casinos would be set up on two ferries between Victoria and Seattle. “It’s an open invitation to the mob, and all that it will bring with it — all the dirty money in terms of raking-off from gambling, the corrup tion of officials, extortion, prostitution, drugs and money being laundered,” Harcourt said. “It basically eats at the foundation of civilization.” He also said he is not keen on the idea of publicly run casinos. “Myself, I see no point in HAPPY THANKSGIVING! the Oct. 22 election without a candidate. Constituency president Gary Jenkins says in a letter to local party members that he has been unable to find a candidate willing to repre. sent the Liberals in the pro vincial election, just two weeks away. However, Jenkins says he plans to hold a nomination meeting tonight in Trail “to see if there is anybody who wishes to run.” “If there are no candidates at this meeting it is my in tention to run nobody in the forthcoming election,” Jen kins says. running a candidate merely for the sake of running a can- didate.” However, Jenkins adds that he hopes two or three Liberal candidates from the Lower Mainland will be elected on Oct. 22. “With this to build on we might be able to field a cred- ible candidate for the pro- vincial election after this one,” he said. The provincial Liberals were represented by Sergio Cocchia in the 1983 cam- paign. Cocchia had just 371 votes in the 1983 campaign — some 8,750 fewer than win- ner Chris D'Arey of the New Democrats. Attacking the NDP as profligate well-thumbed page in the Socred playbook Former premier Bill Bennett won the 1983 election in part by predicting economic chaos if the NDP under leader Dave Barrett returned to power. Bennett's father, W.A.C. Bennett, held off the NDP by invoking the spectre of the socialist hordes emptying the public purse Vander Zalm gave a lacklustre speech at Smithers and looked tired after his intervention in the forestry strike kept him up until 3 a.m. Tuesday. The 11-week strike which has idled 20,000 woodworkers continued but the two sides agreed to mediation under lawyer Don Munroe. Vander Zalm's toothy grin disappeared and his face tightened when a woman lambasted him for criticizing women who choose to have abortions. She demanded answers to a number of policy questions, all of which have been addressed by the NDP. “I can answer that very easily,” said Vander Zalm, his smile returning. “For the things you want, you should vote NDP.” Vander Zalm also had to do some damage control after NDP Leader Bob Skelly appeared to score some points off Russ Fraser, minister for post-secondary education Skelly called for Fraser's resignation after the minister was quoted as saying students should consider putting off their university education if they couldn't afford it. Skelly said it showed the Socreds regard post-secondary schooling as a preserve for the wealthy Fraser, in a news conference Tuesday, said Skelly had distorted his remarks and that he meant those considering post-secondary education should think carefully before going into debt Vander Zalm told the Smithers crowd it isn't govern ment policy to discourage people from continuing their education and that student grants and loans are being reviewed Skelly worked a warm crowd of 500 — his biggest of the campaign — Tuesday night in the Okanagan community of Vernon after his tour was held up by fog. In an emotional address, he called Socred campaign positions shallow, inadequate and deceitful. He said voters remember Vander Zalm's insensitivity as a Bill Bennett cabinet minister and see through his style-oriented cam paign “They know he can't cover up his record in the 60 days before an election takes place and they also suspect what he’s going to do afterwards,” said Skelly, referring to Vander Zalm's two-month stint as premier. “This man is the greatest fog machine that was ever invented.” spenders is a SMALL BUSINESS | [“A®Y WADE ANDERSON Moving to ACCOUNTING : commuremnes retancins stariaan White Rock rE ge or South Surrey? IN COWICHAN By PAUL LOONG Canadian Press DUNCAN Allegiances die hard in Cowichan-Mal ahat where two generations of voters have solidly supported the New Democratic Party and its pre decessor, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. Social Credit, despite being the government 31 of the last 34 years in British Columbia, never stood much of a chance of overrunning the NDP stronghold — some 2,689 square kilometres of lakes, forests and farmland sandwiched between Victoria and Nanaimo. Now with two newcomers fighting for election Oct. 22, Cowichan-Malahat is a microcosm of the generational change sweeping many other constituencies as veteran members of the legislature retire to make way for new blood. Soered excitement was heightened in the riding when Barbara Wallace, the 68-year-old farmer and New Democrat who has held the riding for more than a decade, announced she wouldn't run again Wallace was re-elected in 1983 by a margin of 1,512 votes, or 6.6 per cent of the 22,853 ballots cast, turning back the challenge of Socred Graham Bruce, the young, ambitious, high-profile mayor of North Cowichan. Bruce is back again. This time, he will face Carolyn Askew, a 40-year-old lawyer Bruce, 33, has a young family and is running an expanding grocery store with his brother, but he has always aimed high in public life. He says the tide is turning in Cowichan-Malahat “and it's turning very dramatically Nick Garland, president of the Socred constituency association, said party membership reached 1,100 after the first week of the election campaign, almost double the number at the beginning of the year. “We've run out of application forms right now,” he said Local residents recognize Bruce for revitalizing the town of Chemainus, which falls within his North Cowichan district, following the closure of an old sawmill He is among the Vancouver Island mayors lobbying for federal and provincial funding to put welfare recipients to work in reforestation. | Askew, originally from London, Ont., studied law at the University of British Columbia, worked as the legislative director for the B.C. Federation of Labor in the mid-1970s and moved to Cowichan Bay in 1979. She and her father are partners in a Duncan law firm, specializing in family and labor law nemployment, officially around 14 per cent but estimated to be higher by the NDP, will be the main election issue in the “working people's riding,” said Askew, who knows she must fight Bruce's high profile Garland said Bruce's chances are enhanced by the popularity of Premier Bill Vander Zalm. “It's an unbeat able combination,” Garland said Askew, however, said NDP support is holding well “We're not seeing any swing of our people because of Vander Zalm.” Seven-Up or Regular o or Cherry Pepsi r Diet Pepsi 882.
