A6 CASTLEGAR NEWS, August 13, 1980 Creston Valley - Observing the Great Blue Heron By PATTI THOLL and KIM HASKELL Assistant Naturalists Creston Valley Wildlife * Interpretation Centre We often hear visitors exclaim “Look, a Great Blue Herring!" but, unless they are looking at a fish, it’s doubtful it would be a her- ring, let alone great and blue. Instead, if what they see is a tall, long-legged, long-necked bird, then it’s probably the Great Blue Heron. The largest and most widely distributed of all her- ons, the Great Blue is found along the southern coast of B.C, and across to the Maritimes. Being a colonial bird, it will nest in large numbers in woodland areas, not easily accessible to hu- mans and land predators. Nests are placed in tree tops, and are approximately 1 m. in diameter, 10 centimetres deep, and lined with twigs : and moss, Fish are a staple food of the heron, along with frogs, salamanders, mice, and large insects, There are two basic methods used by herons to catch fish. The first is to stand seemingly motionless in the water, waiting for the prey. In one quick move- ment, the head plunges be- neath the water, catches the meal with the bill, the swal- lows it whole, head first into the gullet. A second hunting me- thod is wading in 16-25 em of water until a fish or some type of appealing food is driven out of its hiding place, Fighting coryneum blight H Coryneum Blight disease is mainly a problem on peaches and apricots, how- ever, in a wet spring such as we have experienced, it can be very severe on cherries as well. : Damage has been so Severe in many orchards that the cherries were not har- vested. Dead spots on the leaves, some shot holes in the leaves and brown to black sunken spots on the fruit are evidence that this disease is present. There will likely also be some cankers on twigs that may produce gum after a fain. This is the same disease that on peaches and apricots causes canker on branches, dead spots and shot holes of leaves, and small purple- brown spots with light cen- ters on fruit. * If this disease is present on any cherries, peaches or apricots the following contro! should be followed: 1) Prune out infected twigs in the d season. The instructor will be Bill Parsons, a top-notch profes- sional budder and grafter the likes of whom are few and far J between. Parsons has many years of experience and is a of 2) To prevent twig and bud infections apply fixed copper fungicide (not copper sulphate) as early as possible after harvest on apricots and peaches and around Sept. 1. for cherries. If infection is severe a second spray about a month later may give more. complete control. 3) To prevent fruit’ in- fection, follow up the autumn treatment with a spray of Ferbam, Ziram or Phygon on peaches only just as the husks are falling. Ferbam must not be applied later than husk fall as it will discolor fruit. A budding course will be held in Creston on Aug. 20. on tree propagation. Anyone seriously inter- ested should make a point of attending this one-day short course. It is open to all, but class size is -limited, so register early. Attendance is by pre-registration only. Con- tact the Creston office for further information and to register. THE GREAT WEST CONNECTION PACIFIC TERI AIRLINES ‘The heron will then catch the meal in its bill. If the heron is ‘unsuccessful in both methods of fishing, it will abandon the location in favor of a new site, - Wildlife There sre two heronrios in the Creston Valley, In 1972 about 95 nests were counted, but their numbers decreased to 58 nests this spring. Although there is no data to support it, general obser- vations show that the de- crease in nesting coincides with an increase in human disturbance. Tourists to the valley sometimes head for the local : heronries for sightseeing and unknowingly scare the elu- sive herons from their nests. If this disregard for the Great Blue Herons. does not stop, the valley could lose this. fascinating bird alto. gether. While neither the 1 man- agemont arca or the Cana- dian Wildlife Service object to people going to see the heronry, a few precautions like quietness and slow ap- proaches to the neats should be considered and then per- haps the herons will still be here in years to come.
