The program, which teaches children effective techniques if approached by an abductor, could have potentially cost the district up to $9,200, which is based on the cost of $4 per stu- dent in the district pRiveryiew But board members refused to allocate funding, despite the offer by Frank Olson, the creator of the program, to discount the cost by chevrolet oldemobile Itd. 4 drive trucks to choose from CALL IKE TODAY FOR YOUR CAR OR TRUCK NEEDS fe furnaces; sales & installation. a TION IKE BRAGA FREE Sais & Re VISIT OUR SHOWROOM TODAY 1008 Columbia Ave., Castlegar 365-3388 CASTLEGAR: 365-2296 Vener 368-0134 WELSON:352-1614 2880 Highway Dr., Trail, B.C. It was a sell-job. The parents there thought it was great, but I had a gut feeling that something was not right,” Despite the board's refusal to fund the program, Brenda Tumer, district parent advisory council member, said the group still hopes to bring the program to the school district, “It was disappointing that they [the board) didn't give their approval in principle. But we'll present it to the administrative officers who have the authority to present it in the schools if they want.” Though district funding was denied, the group made a recent presentation to Pulp Paper and Workers of Canada (PPWC) which donated $150 towards the cost of the program..Other com- munity groups will also be asked for donations. ‘Board says no to streetproofing funds “We'll mac as many presenta- tions as we can,” said Turner, Turner also defended Olson und the . “We have letters of commen- dation from the Solicitor General of Canada and RCMP commis- sioner N. Administrator Jim Gustafson said he has attempted to reach a settlement with the two property owners so that each would have use of a portion of the property. As well, Jackson would be required to remove the playhouse he has on the right-of-way, along with a shed on the municipal Southern Division Champions Castlegar Rebels! | CASTLEGAR JUNIOR REBELS 1994 - 1995 BACK ROW L-R Trainer Tom Campbell, Brent Neumann, Mike Knezacek, Jeff Moffat, Jordan Marlatt, Vince Antignani, Kevin MacGillivray. Neither owner would be allowed to place permanent struc- tures on the property. Jackson would be permitted to plant a hedge along the boundary. However, Gustafson said he couldn't get'‘the two owners to agree to the deal. “The dispute over the right-of- way therefore continues.” he said. He suggested that unless Desch- ene and Jackson can reach some agreement, council should stay out of the dispute and not allow either owner use the right-of-way. O'Connor said he has talked to both property owners and he expressed frustration with the issue. “It seems like you come to anh ROBSON River OTTERS agreement and 48 hours later the agreement is in the toilet.” O'Connor said it is difficult to get both owners in the same room together. “It sure seems to me that two people should be able to get along.” However, he said if the two owners can't reach’an agreement on the right-of-way, then the city should close it off so that neither owner has access to it. Councillor Bob Pakula ques- tioned whether the city should be getting involved in the issue. “I don’t think we should be mediating family feuds,” he said. Council agreed to try one last meeting to get an agreement. I also explained that I wanted to use Internet to find out more information about one of the worlds best and most misunderstood minority groups: redheads! This week I'll explain, the process which I went through to actually use the computer and access the systems that will provide me with the link to the Internet and ultimately to 2%, 0° urfing the ‘net SS In search of the elusive redheads short form for alternate. (Afterall redheads are probably not part of the mainstream), I quickly discovered a further 255 subgroups, some of which are unsuitable for mentioning in a community newspaper. Scrolling through in alphab I order, I d ed there were no redhead subgroups. So back I went to the Message group and this time I chose subgroup 10: news. Here I found only one subgroup andit was not redheads. Back to my original 17 subgroups, this Whew. Rats. Waaaaaa! My 20-minute guest privileges are up and I hardly got my feet wet! But I want more so I called back, signed up, received an e-mail address and now pay Kootenay Network services $5. a month so that I can send and receive e-mail] and continue to surf the USENET system. That will do me for now. I started with 19 groups on the Main Menu and I only made it part way through the first group, Messages. Now that I’ve been through it once, it won’t take me long (I hope) to go through the other 19 groups and their related INTERNET BCNET SEATTLE SERVER SURFING FOR REDHEADS Subway Tom Leckie - Re/Max Castlegar Realty Twin Rivers Control and Refrigeration Ltd. In other words, surfing the ‘net. My explanation and example are very simple ones and geared to people who want a little bit of knowledge about what they can do and how they can do it, without having actually done it (kind of like vicariously surfing). The systems are capable of so m more than my small example that I urge you to try it for yourself. It’s easy, simple and very very inexpensive. Whether you have a Mac or IBM compatible computer, as long as you have a modem and a software program to use the modem you're ready. (At some point you may want to buy another software program such as Mosaic, because this program will help you search on the World Wide Web. Your existing modem software likely can’t do that efficiently). As with any new technology, there is a learning curve so the first thing I wanted to do was learn how to access and use the existing USENET news groups to search for redheads. If I start small then by mid-May when the system is completely hooked up to the full Internet, I'll be ready. So, with an afternoon free at the computer, my modem dialed 365-7271. Suddenly there was information appearing on my screen. The connection was made and I was on my way. I had 20 minutes of guest privileges and I was going to make the best use of my time to find the elusive 5. But which way do I go? Figuring that I must first learn to balance before I learn to surf did not make me happy. I prefer the direct approach — full speed ahead and watch for those killer waves. Rather reluctantly (and only because I had to write about my experience), I started at the beginning. After following the instructions shown on my screen about how to log on as a guest, I ventured forth. Although it doesn’t actually say so, once you log on, you have accessed USENET, z news groups. Under the “Main Menu” there are 19 subgroups none of which were redheads but maybe there is a subgroup somewhere in those subgroups. I thought Id start in the first subgroup - “Messages”. After opening that file I discovered a further 17 subgroups. Being the methodical type, I chose the first one: “alt” , time I chose subgroup 14: Sociology. Realizing there were more than 15 subgroups under Sociology, listed in alphabetical order, I scrolled to ‘r’. No redheads here. 12 minutes left on my 20 minute free time. Maybe redheads are scientific so I tried the scientific group. Hundreds of subgroups in this group but no redheads to be found. 9 minutes left. Maybe Miscellaneous will have it. 26 more subgroups and no redheads to be found. Recreation? 56 subgroups, no redheads 5 minutes left. Subgroup Talk ten subgroups including one for rumors (Tl try and remember this for later). But no redheads. What's this? I wonder what the 390 messages are. Next time. 4 minutes left. I hit the wrong key and accidently asked USENET to start listing the 390 messages. Help! Now I'm reading all about Bill Gates and Microsoft. No, I want redheads! 1 minute left. That would, no doubt, be grounds for divorce! I figure by mid-May more than my feet will be wet. I'll have surfed and then fallen because I didn’t learn all the balancing techniques first. But I'll be right back up looking for ways to keep on top of the wave. That’s what a learning curve is all about. Then, for less than $30 a month I can surf the whole ‘net (two hours on, two hours off) and find the rest of the world’s redheads. -
