THE FIRE STOPPED IT. No Meeting of the Council) was Held 1 the New Hall Last Night, There was no meeting of the city council last night. Just before meeting time there was a quorum present but the gong in the offices which strikes at the same time as that in the fire hall, gave the alarm for the fire on Nickle Plate flat, and there was a rush from the building at dhce to the scene of the fire. . Afterwards Alderman Hooson came back with City Clerk McQueen, waited for some time, and then left. Mayor Goodeve and Alderman La- londe came back later but no one else. Most of the. members had been busy helping to save the city from destruction by fire and were tired out. MAKING PREPARATIONS. International Day will be a Feature of the Exposition. International day,. October ro, at the Spok Industrial Expositi will be one of the biggest. days dur- ing the continuance of the fair. There will .be governors, mayors and officials from all parts of the northwest and from both sides of the border. QUANT A Social WAN be Given in Honor or the Ploncer Work Here A farewell social will be given to- morrow night to Captain Quant, one. of the pioneer Salvation Army officers who opened the work in Rossland over three years ago. = It will be held at- the old. Salvation Army hall, ” Captain’ Quant has given seven year’s service as an. officer, one year in. Denmark and six years in the United States and Canada. She is now going on a four month’s fur- lough to Sweden to visit her father, who is dangerously ill. This is the first furlough’ Captain Quant has had in her whole term of service. Op the Great Wonder and Cobbler there is a vein trending northwest from the eastern line of the Great WYonder, where a shatt 80 feet deep has been sunk. At the line intersecting the Great Wonder and Cobbler the vein splits, one part going due-north and the other southeast. The cause of the split is an. immense body of ore which extends along the surface 100 feet, and at a depth of 70 feet it is over 60 feet wide. The five claims owned by the Okanogan Free Gold Mines, Ltd., which have made so good a show- ing and are the first mines owned in Rossland, outside of the province, to pay a dividend, are located in Okanogan county, Washington. The claims are known as_ the Cobbler, Great Wonder, Similka- meen, Freeze Out and Ufford, and lie about twelve miles south of Camp McKinney, and sixteen miles from Republic. They were first located in 1894 by Mr. Robert Allison, but in Octo- ber oflast year a syndicate was formed with Mr. S. NOT AC, P, R., ENTERPRISE The Proposed Street Hallway WIT Not be Controlled By that Company. Mr. H. E, Macdonnell, of the Canadian Pacific railway, was asked today ahout the proposed street car system, and what interest the Can- adian Pacific had iin it. He said that while Mr. Peters was one. of the promoters, the Canadian Paci- fic company had nothing whatever to do with the scheme. Captain Duncan and Mr. W. A. Macdonald, who were applying for the charter, had back of them a company that was operating over forty systems of street railways, but that company was not an adjunct of the Canadian Pacific railway. THE NUCLEUS OF A LIBRARY. A Movement on Foot to Provide Some Decent Place Where Men can Meet Some of the practical philantro- phists of the city have inaugurated a movement to erect a building at the corner of Spokane street and Second avenue to be used asa li- brary and club during the winter months, It is intended eventually to turn the structure into a public library and reading rooms so soon as the funds can be obtained, but at present to make it a resort for men who have no other place than a saloon in which to spend their time. It will, if started, be run on the same lines as those that are established and proved so _ success- ful in other cities of much greater magnitude than Rossland.
