QUEBEC (cP) — Saying media reports of Tuesday's proceedings bordered on por- nography, Judge Andre Sir- ois today ordered journalists and the public excluded from the trial of national assembly member Gilles Gregoire on - charges of committing im- moral acts with minors. “The press may have fun- damental rights, but we can't permit multiple abuses of the right of youth to grow up properly,” said Sirois, a fa- ther of three, adding he was speaking as a parent. “I can't, condone reports that border on the type of pornography found in the back rooms of news shops and wrapped in cellophane to protect our children. “Considering the interests of society and morality in general, I order that no one other than the accused, his counsel, and the Crown pros- ecutors have access to the court.” Gregoire'’s trial, on seven charges of committing im- moral acts with minor girls, is being held in juvenile court, and Sirois has the power to order that the trial be held in private. In fact, most such trials are not public. Sirois allowed the media to be present Tuesday, saying the public's right to seé that justice was being done was important. He acknowledged today that the media had fol- lowed his directive not to re- veal the identity of the wit- nesses. ’ CHANGED HIS MIND But he said the accuracy and the detail of the media reports of the testimony made him change his mind. Pierre Gaudreau, Grego- ire’s lawyer, said today he was upset at the judge’s de- cision because Gregoire will not be able to publicly refute the testimony of Tuesday's witnesses. A 17-year-old girl testified she had been paid hundreds of dollars to perform various sexual acts with Gregoire, and had also been paid to procure a 12-year-old girl for him. The witness reported the activities in detail, She was followed by an 18-year-old who testified that Gregoire had described himself to her as a “nice maniac.” The media reports of the trial. drew a crowd of people to the courtroom today, and there was much pushing and shoving past the specially- hired security guards as spectators tried to get seats in the courtroom. These ef- forts turned out to be in vain, however, because everyone was thrown out. « The 57-year-old Gregoire, co-founder of the Parti Que- becois with Premier Rene I a Barrett expected rested in his national as- ¢ sembly office in March and has agreed not to sit in the ; q as rep the asbestos-mining riding of Frontenac since 1976.
