co _Castlégar News December 16, 1987 Baby donor's mom ‘waiting LOS ANGELES (AP-CP) — A woman who wants to donate her doomed baby's organs to transplant recip- ients says she's writing notes to well-wishers and prepar. ing for Christmas as she waits the birth of her fatally malformed child. “['m just sitting anxiously waiting for something to happen,” Brenda Winner, 30, said by telephone from her home in suburban Arcadia. Winner said she'll name the baby Jarren, whether the infant is a boy or girl, and she and her husband, Michael, 29, “decided to go ahead and hold the baby,” although the new- born’s death is inevitable. She said her delivery date is officially today, but it could be later. Last week, officials at Loma Linda University Med- ical Centre, 100 kilometres east of Los Angeles, agreed to deliver the Winners’ child, who suffers a severe defect called anencephaly, in which most of the brain is missin; Such babies often ar: born and those born alive die within days or weeks. In October, an anencepha- lic girl was born to an Ontario couple and maintained briefly on life support until declared brain dead. Then Loma Linda doctors Consistent discipline a problem KITCHENER, Ont. (CP) — Children should receive the same discipline at schools and day-care centres as at home or they'll remain uncontrol lable, a U.S. educator has told an early childhood edu- cation conference. “That kind of dissonance is a big problem,” said Bettye Caldwell, a professor of edi cation at the University of Arkansas. “That is the first and most important thing to work on. You have to get the parents together with you; you have to get a mode of action that both will support.” 713 - 4th Street Office 365-3664 Rev. The father of Baby Gabriel, Fred Schouten, 36, died earlier this month, ap- parently of a heart attack. Schouten and his wife, Karen, decided to go through with the birth of their child, though they knew it couldn't survive its brain defect, so her organs could be used for transplant. ‘The transplant from Baby Gabriel to Paul Hole was widely reported as the first such case. However, a British doctor said during a medical meet- ing in Anaheim last month that a brain-dead anencepha- lic baby was used as a heart donor at Harefield Hospital in England more than a year ago. Loma Linda's transplant surgeon, Dr. Leonard Bailey, hinted there were other such cases in North America be fore Hole’s transplant, al- though he refused to elab- orate. The Loma Linda hospital agreed to keep the Winners’ child alive on a respirator for up to seven days, with life support periodically discon nected to determine if the infant is brain-dead. If the newborn is declared brain-dead during that per- iod, any organs that can be used for transplant will be taken. Without life support, the organs would deteriorate as the infant dies, and the organs couldn't be trans- planted. The use of anencephalic babies as organ donors has been avoided by U.S. hospi- tals because of ethical con- cerns raised by the need to keep such infants on life sup- port even though they will die. Winner said she and her husband don’t feel sad and that she soon will deliver a baby doomed to die. “Right now we don't feel any sense of loss,” she said. “I'm sure afterwards there will be some, but I don’t look for it. I don’t want to be de- pressed, but I'm sure we will Winner said she called 118 hospitals around the United States seeking to have her child's organs donated, but “they all said legally they couldn't do anything.” Answer to Sunday Crossword Puzzle No. 291 [WO © DPRMA>mo} DIF] w= In Azic> a a G=r sa I |>} Mimo} Answer to Sunday, Dec. 13 Cryptoquip: WHEN THE CITY'S LIGHTS ALL WENT OUT, TODAY'S ENCOUNTER SESSION TURNED INTO GROPE THERAPY.
