Or to put another way, every 14 hours a number equivalent to the population of Castlegar dies — 3.5 million children a year.” Several years ago, Rotary Polio Plus program which had as its objective, the elim ination of childhood polio throughout the world by the turn of the century. A goal of $120 million US was set to be raised by May 24, 1988 for the purchase of polio vaccine, Some $114 million has already been raised and it is expected to exceed the target by the final day. Any extra, therefore, Will be directed to fighting five other fatal diseases of children, hence the ‘plus’ on the project name. To help achieve this goal, the five West Kootenay Rot ary Clubs of Trail, Rossland, Beaver Valley, Nelson and Castlegar have agreed to Sponsor a series of concerts by a West Germany visiting brass band. The band, 23 musicians and nine auxiliaries, is currently paying a return visit to the eastern United States. It has indicated a strong interest in visiting the West Kootenay area and has agreed to come at its own expense to give a series of concerts with all proceeds to go to the Polio be billeted by the clubs and toured around places of in- terest in the valley. “Western Canada,” Gouk said, “is ‘very big’ in Ger- many. They are an outdoors- oriented people and their visit will not only boost the Polio Plus Project, but local tourism publicity as well.” The band, which includes brass instruments, bass gui- tar, piano and drums, offers local music lovers a rare opportunity to hear the once- familiar and now returning big band sound. The concert in Castlegar will be given at the Stanley Humphries Activity Room on April 5. One adult ticket will buy sufficient vaccine to vaccinate 40 children, On April 6 the local Rotary clubs will be hosting a joint dinner for the visitors at the Community Complex.
