By Rev. DAVID A. SMITH Grace Presbyterian Church As I write, this is the first day of summer. Summer is the time to think about ecology. In order ‘‘to live,’ we need clean grass and lakes and rivers and trees and air. “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could learn what it had to teach, and not, when I die, discover that I had not lived,’’ wrote Henry Thoreau. “Take care of my garden,’’ God told the first man ‘and woman. Ecology, the care of God’s ‘‘gar- den,’’ must become a concern for all of us if we are ever going to stop our unthinking manipulation of the en- vironment to the point that human life itself is being threatened. We must treat with respect and nurture and maintain our home, the environ- ment. The Creator had a love for and a plan in the interrelationship and in- terdependence of living things. We do not exist in an isolated moment in time. Life is an unending stream. There .are delicate balances and rhythms and intricate interrelation- ships-buitt-into the Tow of renewal almost too wonderfulto comprehend. The web of a spider reminds us that we function in a web of life. Break ‘one strand and the entire web collap- ses, for it is utterly dependent for its wholeness on every single strand. Summertime is a time to be quiet, to slow down, to observe, to remem- ber the words of the great conser vationist John Muir who once said, “*When we try to pick out anything by itself we find it hitched to every thing in the universe."” Life is a gift, a mystery, a miracle to be treated with intelligence and with much care for ‘‘the earth is the Lord’s!"’ Summertime is the time to thank God for the earth and creation, and to appreciate God’s world of wonder BIRTHS & DEATHS BIRTHS ALLISON To Marie and Graham.
