 Fisticuffs at Stanley Humphries
has Castlegar mother outraged

The Castlegar School Board wants to
adopt a tough anti-fighting policy.

The proposal comes in the wake of a
severe beating one 14-year-old female
Stanley Humphries Secondary School
student received at the fist of another
15-year-old girl on Jan. 12.

The 15-year-old could now be facing
charges of assault causing bodily harm.

“We're very concerned,” board chair
Gordon Turner said of the incident and
other altercations.

“In this case... it seemed this was
more than a fight. It seems to be more
like a beating and that sort of thing is
something none of us want to condone.”

Turner said the School District No. 9
board is looking to adopt a tough new
policy which would curb acts of violence.
At an in-camera meeting, board mem-
bers also discussed a plan that would see
professionals visit local schools to talk to
students about increasing acts of vio-
lence.

“I don’t think kids understand the
consequence of brutality,” Turner said. “I
think TV has lead them to the wrong im-
pression about violence.”

Meanwhile, the mother of the 14-
year-old girl who was beaten at Stanley
Humphries says she is pleased the board
is addressing violence in the school sys-
tem.

“It won't help my child now, but it will
help another child and I think that is all
they can do,” said the mother, who asked
not to be identified for fear of repercus-
sion against her or her daughter.

“T really think they are going to do
something about this,” the mother said.
“I think (Superintendent Everette)
Surgenor is a really good guy. I have a re-
ally positive feeling about him, as I do
about the majority of the staff at Stanley
Humphries.”
