Senior centre being eyed @ Committee urges input to determine Castlegar’s needs Donna Bertrand NEWS REPORTER A committee formed to bring a new seniors recreation centre to Castlegar is ready to get to work. All it needs is a little more information. “At the present time we cannot make any definite de- cisions until a substantial of the q i ires are returned to us,” committee chairman Paul Oglow said Monday. The questionnaires were distributed to various outlets — city hall, the Community Complex, Celgar’s information office and Oglow’s Paint and Wallcoverings — in early November. It asks anyone over 50 years old for input on whether they want a new centre, where they'd like it, what it should include, how it should be paid for and in what area they live. “We're hoping to have all the responses back by Dec. 20,” Oglow said, adding they can be returned to the com- plex. The committee was formed at a public meeting held last month to determine if there was enough support from se- niors to proceed with a feasi- bility study. “That was a major step to get that kind of commitment from the committee mem- bers,” city treasurer Jacquie Hamilton said. Hamilton and complex di- rector Pat Metge are providing staff support. Also on the committee are Ron Ross, John Moran, Walter Gorkoff, Andre LeMarche, John Kozniuk, George Re- balkin and Dorothy Raymond. Si- hota claimed that Social Credit mismanage- ment could result in as much as 24 per cent in- creases for every B.C. vehicle. Based on that, yearly car insurance that may have cost $800 in 1991 will go for $992 if rates are increased by 24 per cent. And if pending increases are frustrating to motorists, try being an insurance agent. Anderson Insurance’s Carvil Moorey says agents are being kept in the dark. “We haven't been told anything,” he said. “Not from the government or not from ICBC. “All we know is what we hear from the me- dia,” Moorey said. And media reports have been extensive. Af- ter an ind dent auditor r d through the ICBC books, Sihota took the information public. He said ICBC was under the thumb of the Social Credit government, which would not approve any rate increase. Sihota said Socreds allowed the Crown cor- poration’s surplus to deplete to alarmingly low levels. The end result is an increase. Just how much is uncertain. “Our major concern is that ICBC has become a political football again, as parties on all sides start to blame each other,” Moorey said. “We shouldn't being making a political football out of this.” Football or not, ICBC chairman Raymond Addington isn’t playing. Instead, Addington joined the fray Monday, saying politicians knew nothing about the insurance business. Addington is looking for rate increases of 19 per cent for 1992, 14 per cent for 1993 and nine per cent through 1996. Based on that, cars in- sured for $800 in 1991 would go for $1,405.51 by 1996.
