Robson and Tarry's again tied for third. “We were really pleased with the help Selkirk gave us and, overall, I think the kids were well behaved,” said Rodgers. “The important thing is to give the kids an opportunity to get out there and play.” Many of the kids are already looking to next year to get another crack at the Champi- onship while other are hoping to hone their skills further at the Middle School level. Fortunately they don't have long to wait for the next big sporting action. Basketball practices are slated to begin next weeek at most of the Ele- gone es at the higher levels. “Doug Hickey from Stanley Humphries says he has noticed the calibre of clementary sports has really started to improve lately,” said Rodgers. . The teams were broken into three divisions according to skill level. Some schools also entered more than one team in each division. Many are fooled by its size and few contemplate its true tive force on the planet. Taking this into consideration, you might have a glimmer of understanding about what the rs of the Castlegar Atom International Invitational Tourna- ment were thinking when they brought 14 Atom teams into Castlegar last weekend for a three day blow-out. , these Atoms weren't of the nuclear variety, but they did seem to hold within them the same destructive desire. They are hockey players age 9-11 and the first tournament of its kind held in Castlegar. The tournament was held at both the Complex and Pioneer Arena. Castlegar has always had an Atom program but this is the first year the community has imple- mented a tier system to separate skill and develop levels. The tournament last week- end was a Senior Atom or “AA” tournament and two Castlegar teams, the Lightning and the Bru- ins, took part. Other teams at the tournament included two Penticton quads, Trail, Beaver Valley, Nelson, Spok: Seattle and ide. The teams were split into three divisions for the round robin and then division winners played off against one another to find a winner. Eight teams eventually made the playoffs including the Castle- gar Lightning who cruised through their division with a 3-0 record. The Lightning are coached by Pat Price, Mike Davidoff and Gary Fleming, and were reported to have one of the more entertaining teams in the tournament. They are now carrying 19 players which gives Sauer the opportuni- ty to find and evaluate a few more players. ‘The Rebels next action will be this Friday when they take on the Revelstoke Grizzlies at the Crypt. The Grizzlies continue to sport the ment, beating Penticton McDon- alds 5-4 in the final. It was Trail’s fourth straight game on Sunday and sixth of the Castlegar Bruins, coached by Bruno Tassone and Frank Shlakoff, are sure to have plenty of p ice in the future. since “To play six comp games at two different rinks in a 36-hour span is quite a feat in itself, but for the boys to show the kind of hustle and stamina they demon- strated right up to the final against Penticton was unbeliev- able,” Trail coach Rick Basso told the Trail Times. While Trail played in the final, the Lightning were playing in the consolation final at the Pioneer arena against the Westside Wolverines from Westbank. Westside had lost to Penticton in the other semi-final and were not anxious to hit the road back to Kelowna empty handed. Meanwhile the Lightning were still reeling from their emotional overtime defeat to Trail and it showed as Westside pulled up their bootstraps for a 4-2 win. The loss was a tough t coordi and Atom division manager Bryan Bucci forsees a bright future. “This is the start of the tourna- ment and the idea is to have it as a highlight tournament for the Castlegar Minor Hockey Associa- tion,” said Bucci. “We hope to be able to do it on an annual basis.” “The level of hockey is excel- lent. Some of those kids really know how to shoot, skate and pass. We had good sportsman- ship and it was nice to see Spokane win the most sports- manship trophy.” Bucci said that the weekend left everyone from the organizers down to the kids exhausted but that “to watch all those kids out there having fun, it was a good kind of tired.” The next Atom action in Castlegar is this Thursday at the Casth R i way to end a long d but the young players know they have lots of hockey ahead of them in the future.
