The trades and labor unions are out with a circular urging laborers and friends of laborers to get their names on the voter’s list, and asked to remember that only by their votes can they assist in electing a mayor and city council who are kindly disposed toward labor. They no doubt mean well, but we take excep- tions to the wording of the appeal. Every good, law-abiding citizen is a friend of labor. One who is not acquain- ted with the people here, by reading that circular would think there was a great atrife between the laboror and his enemies, when in fact there is no coun- try or locality where the laboring people receive a more kind consideration than they do in Rossland. Everybody are their friends and want to see them re- ceive goodand even high wages, and _ men who complain of that stato of aff- faira are not themselvea fair minded. The Record likes to see the workin, people alive to their interests and bond together for their mutual protection, but there is such « thing as their being too aggressive for theirown good. They not unfrequently put a fight when there is no reagon for it and it ig seldem bene- it arises to them in auch cases. —— Alderman Lalonde will have an op- portunity this evening at the council meeting to save the city $2,800, and keep faith with the ratepayers, who un- derstood that neither the aldermen or the Mayor would ask compensation for their services this term. Mayor Wal- lace and Aldermen Clute and Edgren havedeclared themselves as forcing the payment of salaries, while Aldermen Goodeve, Thompson and Barrett are eutspoken against it. Mr. Lalonde voted to biiag the motion up for the first reading, but announced that he did not wish to be understoud as pledging himself to vote for its final passage, His friends say he will oppose the mea- sure tonight and itis to be hoped he will. He will add many to his list of friends by doing so. All eyes are upon him. Tomorrow is the last day of registra- tion. Every good citizen who is entitled to vote at the coming city election, should see to it that his name is on the voter’s list. Do not make the mistake of thinking that registering last year will serve for thia, for it will not. Be sure to register. It appears that Spain has accepted the r unavoidable and wil] take the $20,000,- offered by the United States for the Philippines and thus conclude the peace terms. Uncle Sam, with John Bull at his back, has gone straight forward in his dealings with Spain despite the chances of other powers interfering. —_—_ ‘The Spokane brokers have not been Catarrh coming into Dr. Chase's office of the cures made.
