A STRIKE CAUSED BOOM Ore Found in Rathmellen Sends Stock Up and Stimulates Mevement—Sacrifice ef Large Bleck ef Okanogan Breaks the Prige, But It Is Recevering. There was a large and sudden in- crease in dealings‘on the stock ex- chanye this morning, confined en- tirely to two stocks and due to special causes. Rathmulieo had shown marked activity yesterday and had stiffened from $1{c on Sat- urday to 534¢ with sales of 19,500 shares. Today the same movement j continued and sales aggregated 36,- i ooo shares, the price jumping rap- | idly until it reached a maximum of } the lowest sale being made at cy 6c. The other cause of excitement was Okanogan. One of the stock- holders had put up 90,000 shares as collateral and lost it. The holder of the note, in order to realize on the security, sacrificed it for what he could get, and thus: broke the market. The stock, for which 7c was bid on Saturday, went down to 514¢ bid yesterday, and today there was the liveliest contest betweenthe sellers of the big lot and the buyers who were eager to snap it up, so that 53,000 shares changed hands at prices ranging all the way from 3% to6¥%c. The block in ques- tion has been nearly all disposed of and, as the last clean-up is under- stood to be very satisfactory, a rapid recovery is expected. Ressiand Sailce. COSS COMMITS SUICIDE. wet Rossland Tallor Hurries From Life by Means of Morphine. William Coss, a tailor who lett here on Saturday morning, was found dying in 4a-room at the Alpha lodging house on Riverside avenue, Spokane, on Monday morning and before physicians arrived he was dead. A partly empty bottle of morphine showed that he had com- mitted sutcide by means- of that drug. Coroner. Baker is quoted by the Spokesman-Reviewas saying: “It was a clear case of suicide. No money was found on the body. I understand trom friends of the de- ceased that when he left Rossland he had considerable money, which he subsequently lost gambling. This is the only explanation I have learn- ed so tar as to the reasons which led to the suicide. 1 am told he leaves a mother, residing at Troy, N. Y., but no relatives in this section.” Coss came to Rossland last sum- mer ad aftér working a few weeks in M. J.
