. l::,EPP JALK Y'know, one of these days I'm going to clear the shelves of back-dated stories concerning hockey, etc., however, since the hockey season is still with us around the country, this week's stories won't be too far off the line. It seems that Nelson Minor Hockey people put on an Atom tournament in early April in which the Rossland Atoms took second place. This team, a combination of the Red and White Atom House league teams, coached by Dan and John McFarland and Don Brandt, won four out of five games played. They outscored their opposition 37-16,, but because they were tied in wins and losses the Nelson Cable West team took first because they were the only team to beat Rossland. An interesting note on this tournament is that it was organized by Bob Jeffs, who some Rossland ball fans may remember having played on the Capilano ball club in one season when they formed an all-star team and did some barnstorming after the regular season was over. Bob was working some of the time and some of his fill-in personnel did not read the rules too carefully as stop-time was used in some games at the discretion of timekeeper and referee. The coaches would like to thank the Rossland fans who helped to cheer their team on for a job well done. Nelson tried a new format this year, owing to the poor state of the economy. The Nelson Minor Hockey people charged just a $5 fee for the hockey players to sign up and got a good response. A novice tournament in Beaver Valley in late March saw Rossland's Senior Novice team, coached by John Stanton and Scott Leyland, place fourth in a four-game tourney, winning two and losing two. Winning over Beaver Valley twice and losing to Spokane and Castlegar. Goals for and against decided their position in the standings. MVP's for Rossland were Jarrett Zanussi, Eddie Levesque, Jarrod Stanton and Scott McFarland. will! HITJ Pepper flr.li/4~ In the Junior Novice side of that tourney, the Rossland team, coached by Bobby Williams and Howie McMeekin, took first place, winning all four games played and outscoring their opposition 24-8. Five MVP's for Rossland were Darren Williams, twice, two hat tricks; Dallas Stanton, hat trick; Brian French, hat trick and.B.ian McMeekin. So, a pretty successful season for the little guys has come to an end. Now we have the usual combination of hockey playoffs plus the start of the baseball season. In hockey our Canadian teams are doing OK but in the baseball world we are not doing that well right now but maybe they will wind up in a blaze of glory. What a start to the golf season at the upper course. Our foursome of Frank Balckwell, Wilf Woodhouse, Chris Christianson and me were the first out on Friday morning but on Friday night the world became white again and the clubs are cooling off until we get something approaching more summer-like weather. I guess some hardy types are still rushing it but when I think of all those nice warm days to come I don't feel too bad that I've only played 45 holes to date. How about that reat old chap that took the Masters? I just love to watch the look on his face when he sinks a long putt or watches a long drive sailing out there, there must be thousands of others that have said it before but I'll say it again. Great show, Jack Nicklaus! A late note just handed me says that a big cribbage tournament will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Lower Legion Hall in Rossland. Play and refreshments will be available with the tourney fee set at $1.00 per person. Apparently the first one held a couple of weeks back was quite a succesful venture and so it~ be repeated. Now I think that's all so I'll say, 'Til next time, then! :, I ! I ' I I
