Cleaning Lady, Aged 62 Becomes Radio Star Miriam Blue, a 62-year-old cleaning woman at radio station KMOX in St. Louis, became an instant success when Jack Carney, the city's best-known radio personality, decided to put her on the air to offer advice to the lovelorn. Now called Miss Blue, the ex-cleaning woman handles her new job as efficiently and expertly as she handled her ~ mops and brushes. Her unique talent and uninhibited manner of talking to the callers has made the program one of the best-rated in St. Louis. ‘= She explains how she got started~in radio; “When I thought Jack Carney had gone off the air for commercials, I'd rush in and get the papers and the ashtrays, And he'd say, ‘Well, how are you, Miss Miriam Blue?’ and I'd say, “AIL is welll’ for a long time, I didn't even know I was on the air.” Then Mr. Carney: asked Miss Blue to participate in the show. She left her cart, mops and pails outside, doffed her rubber gloves and started talking over the microphone regularly on Carney's four-hour morning show to his 100,000 listeners. - Says Miss Blue: “It was fun, It wasn't anything planned. He just got on the air and told people to write Miss Blue. And the next thing, letters started coming in.” Now she is billed as the station's “family relations ex- pert," and she appears twice a week to answer calls and let- ters, She is paid $40 a week for two ten-minute shows, spon- sored by an appliance maker. ‘The answers she gives to those asking advice are both uninhibited and often offbeat. When a man called and said his wife refused to tell him where she went to work every day, Miss Blue told him: “Sometimes it's better to be in the dark than to know what's going on.” Whena woman complained -- that her husband was coming home with cosmetics on his col- lar, she told her: “Maybe it wasn't another woman. He might be wearing cosmetics himself. Give him the benefit of the doubt.” Because of her show, a loca! department store now sells “All-l-] is well-1" T-shirts, shirts. 7 Despite her fame, Miss Blue still lives with the eldest of her two daughters and two grandchildren, and she con- tinues to work as a cleaning woman, i When asked about her success on radio, she says: “I'm really surprised at all the fuss. I'm still here every day doing my work and going home.” In her spare time, Miss Blue spends timé’in Christian Science activities, as she al- ways did. Give your fam our ect. y Sour Cream.
