C4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, November 28, 1979 Bridge Beat By JOY KEILLOR Defensive Play Your defensive contract is to take enough tricks to set the declarer. Some defenders get greedy and try some fancy way of setting the declarer an extra trick and through this procedure, have permit- ted the declarer to make his ime, On the other hand, many games have been made be- cause the defense got pan- icky and grabbed their sure tricks and ran, making good declarer’s or dummy’s inter- mediate cards. Keep Your Eye On Dummy Frequently, the method declarer will use to develop the hand is written in dum- Second Hand Low This old rule has merit; however, there are excep- tions which can be spotted only by judgement acquired after long experience. Use it this way — play second hand low, unless you have a very good reason for violating this rule. Third Hand High This is a wise rule to follow unless you have a special reason to make an exception. Ifyou are third hand and you're going to play one of two or more touching honors, use the lowest card of this sequence. For example, when making an opering lead from K,Q,J,x, play the top card the my. Here are some 1) A long, near estab- lished suit in dummy spells danger (this may mean that you must barge right into the other side suits.) 2) A short suit in dum- my suggests declarer may try to trump off losing cards from his own hand, and may even attempt a complete: cross-ruff. This may mean that the defense should lead a trump at every opportunity. 8) A balanced dummy (no long suit, no short suit) usually means that the wait- and-see policy is safe. (You ean afford to wait until you can catch bigger fish with your high cards.) There is enough logic in this old saw to make it endure; with blind devotion. Leading through strength does not mean lead- ing through a brick wall such as A,K,Q,xx in dummy. You can't get through, and may easily permit declarer to dis- card losers from his hand on these winners. The purpose of leading through dummy strength is usually: - 1) To get out of the lead by giving the declarer some- thing that is his anyway. 2) To establish cards, in that suit, for partner who plays after the dummy. The most important part of this old rule is “leading up to dummy weakness.” Fre- quently, it is possible to shift the lead to the proper hand so this can be done. The following example will illustrate this principle: You must overtake your partner's King and return the Jack of diamonds through declarer and up to dummy weakness. @ 10,8,6,2 9 AK,10,6,2 9 9, 5 ‘you) @ J,10,9 * A,9,6,3,2 Editor, Castlegar News: Prince George Jr.-Sr. High School will be holding a reunion for students and teachers attending in the years 1945 - 1955, The event will be held June 14 at the Royal Can- adian Legion Hall in Prince George. Price is $12 per person. The party is on a first- come, first-serve basis, so everyone is urged to get their tickets now. For further information, contact the -following self. appointed ,committee of three: Clyde Smaaslet, 120 Aitken Cres., Prince George, B.C. V2L 4N1; Mrs. Jean May -at (604) 664-7724; or Mrs. Ruth Flynn at’ (604) 564-7731. Mrs. Ruth Flyan Prince George, B.C. King, but when following suit, use your cheapest card, the Jack. To follow suit with the King, would deny holding the Queen, to follow with the Queen would deny the Jack. You may make an ex- ception when you want to capture an honor in sumny. In the following example, if declarer plays Dummy's Queen you should cover with the King but if declarer plays low, you should put in your 10, keeping your King to capture dummy's Queen. 9 Qxx Dummy Lead ¥ 4 #K,10,x (you) In this following ex- ample, if declarer leads the Queen from dummy, you should cover with the King hoping to have declarer spend his Queen and Ace on the same trick, possibly promoting the Jack or the Ten in your partner's hand, Qyxx (Dummy) xx (You) A,d.x (Declarer) i Of course if dummy con. tained the Q,J,10 there would be no advantage in covering, and if the declarer held only A,x, you would have donated an extra trick by covering. Example: Usually, when an honor i led and you hold a higher honor in the suit, you should. cover with your honor. You might establish a lower card in your own or partner's hand.
