When Dana Star, a 39-year
old mother of two, had a
tubal ligation six years ago,
she bade farewell to birth-
control pills.

Star, a special-education
teacher with the handicap-
ped, says she figured sterili-
zation was a relatively simple
way of preventing further
pregnancies and she wouldn't
have to worry about side ef-
fects.

She's been on the pill for
several years and was con-
cerned about how it might be
affecting her system.

As for the morality of the
matter, Star says she felt
blessed with the two healthy
children she has already and
she didn’t want to risk child-
bearing again at her a

OTTAWA (CP) — As
many a furniture buff or
mere handyman knows,
western red cedar has a smell
and color all its own.

Unfortunately, it also con-
tains a chemical called pli-
catic acid that causes asthma
in sawmill workers, carpen-
ters and cabinet makers.

“Over the past 15 years,
we diagnosed about 300
patients with asthma caused
by western red cedar,” Moira
Chan-Yeung writes in the
latest issue of the journal
Future Health.

“Practically all of them
worked with the wood con-
tinuously or for prolonged
intermittent periods.”

Chan-Yueng and her col-
leagues at the University of
British Columbia's Occupa-
tional Diseases Research
Group have been studying
red cedar asthma for many
years.

The B.C. Workers’ Com-
pensation Board now pays
workers short-term compen-
sation as a result of their
work.

Most of the asthma pati-
ents had been exposed to
other kinds of wood dust for
years without any problems.
After periods of steady ex-
posure to cedar dust ranging
en six weeks to three
