Ministry of Environment is renewing its effort to halt the spread of Eurasian water milfoil in southern B.C. waters, a ministry news release Says. The ministry will distribute warning cards and public information pam- phiets to boaters this summer, and has posted warning signs at boat- launching ramps in key areas. “Prevention of spread is the most cost-effective-methodte-combat the adverse environment impacts of this plant,” Environment Minister Bruce Strachan said inthe release “Our first priority is to ‘advise boaters, anglers and waterskiers about the problem to discourage further spread of fragments on boating equip- ment. We suspect that transportation of the weed on trailered boats is the main means of spread.”” Programs to control infestations of the weed are underway at lakes in Nanaimo, the Shuswap and Okanagan valleys, and in Christina and Cultus Lakes. The province provides 75 per cent of funding for those programs, while local agencies contribute the balance, the release says. Ministry staff will also continue sur- Veittance of takes-in-southern—B.C., concentrating on Vancouver Island and the Kootenay area where milfoil is not wellestablished First introduced to B.C. about 1970, Eurasian water milfoil has since become a nuisance to recreation in a number of important lakes.
