I've been getting fairly good feedback from folks on this column and one thing that pleases me is that some people [mostly women] who aren't all that interested in sports have been reading Prankly Speaking. I appreciate that and please don't stop, but I thought I would take a look at sports fans and who or what they are, a First of all, I don’t think I'm climbing too far out on a limb when I say that'the vast majority of sports fans are men. I know. this is changing to some degree, ina sense because of the media, especially TV and Radio. Women have become more informed, even if it is reluctantly and through osmosis. Even if they try to not pay attention when ‘news Switches to sports, subconsciously they retain enough to surprise even themselves. But I digress, let’s continue to identify the real Sports fan. He can gen- erally be lumped into two categories, the fan and the enthusiast. The enthusiast gets out there and participates while the fan may be older or slower or for whatever reason, more sedentary. In both cases however, the world of sports, whether professional or local is a major interest, The term “Fan” has it’s roots in the word fanatic so let's examine the Fan in that light. | - , The True Sports Fan [TTSF] buys the Vancouver Province [ Not the ‘Vancouver Sun] on a daily basis so he can keep up to date. TTSF looks at the box scores first and is into statistics. Then he'll read the reports. He Enows most of the players on most of the teams in most of the sports and can tell you how the play of each individual is an asset ‘or liability to’each team: is an armchair’ Coach‘ or General Manager,’ He prides himectf on his knowledge of the game, iders his abilities as a strategist to be right up there with those who are getting paid for it, and knows how he would wheel and deal to iniprave any club through trades.’ \" | TUN ““TTSF is the guy wearing the Miami Dolphins T-shirt or the Toronto Blue Jays cap or who has an authentic’ replica of Bob Gainey's sweater hanging in his closet: He still has his old team jacket from high school or college, even if he ‘can’t zip it up anymore: If you're going to play the Part, you've got to look the part. : it * “TTSF plays both versions of Punto and can't count the number of times he's been “this close” to winning the big one.’ *” rR Then of course there's the sports nut; He's the guy who spends sever- al thousand to buy a satellite dish and bas a couple of TV's and ‘VCR's 80 he can not only watch sporting events two at a time but can record a couple more for later consumption. This comes in handy when be's out following the Castlegar Junior Rebels on the road, even in a losing sea- son. 3 eh ‘Tue sports fan that got me onto this whole tirade is a breed unto itself. Tt sees value in sports - social, philosophical, perhaps - but most impor- tantly monetary value. This fan is the collector. Collecting sports para- phemalia has become big business, just ask Pete Rose, Top of the list is still collecting cards, Here in Cas¢ “hy STORE HOURS? 020.008. Comprised of five teams, the league was started by Frank King in 1976. Expanded from the original two teams, they have dispensed with the soft rubber, pucks but have retained most of the other rules, No contact - no slap shots - no Statis- tics - no record of wins and losses - just fun. Three minor penalties results in a three game Suspension - no goons want- ed. The five teams are Goose Creek/Valley Vikings [an amal- gamation of two teams from last year], Mallards Sports, Kalesnikoff Lumber, R.G. Maririe, and Loomis/AM Ford. One of the players for Goose Creek [who shall remain name- less] refers to this male bonding event as “Beer Belly Hock- ey” - may have something to do with how they celebrate wins or console themselves after losses. For the record that these Gentlemen don’t keep, Goose Creek defeated Mallard’s Sports 4-1 last Sunday, ‘SUN STAFF PHOTOS / Frank Derby It tales all kinds of people to make up this big world. j And different people have different values- take that bicycle you never ride.
