There is nothing new in saying that it's difficult to browse through a news paper, listen to'a news cast or watch the days events on the news hour without being bombarded with vivid images of pain and suffering. And although the sheer volume and intensity of the images may to some extent have desensitized those of us who have not lived in that kind of trauma we can never say that we have not been affected by it. We've watched the extreme close yp shots of the painful expression on the face of a suffering child born in a country dominated by a merciless foreign military government. We've seen families flee for their lives from murderous rampages in which even the innocent children have been the intended targets of a self seeking madman. We've been aloud to eavesdrop in our own back yards on families struggling to survive scandalous and libelous rumours that have no basis in reality. We've looked on as documentaries dissect the plight of the single parent families who's bread winner is no longer around. We've felt the agony of the cameras caught the starburst of light refracting through the tears of those who's efforts to help have met with nothing but resistance and rejection. . We've seen the down fall of good men and women as their friends and associates desert them because it is no longer personally expedient to be associated with someone whose popularity has dissipated. We've been the privileged observers (sometimes willingly and sometimes unwillingly) at mockeries of justice as the system is skillfully manipulated to allow the guilty go free while the innocent are victimized. We've even been subjected to hidden camera reports of some of the abusive and torturous form of punishment that many have suffered at the hands of hedonistic tyrants at all Calvary Baptist Church Sunday School 9:45 am Moming Worship 11:00 am Evening Service 6:30 pm Pastor Bob Marsh 365-3430 - Church 809 Merry Creek Rd. byterian The Pr RC i raj in Canada GRACE PRESBYTERIAN 2605 ColumbiaAve. You are inwited to join us in Easter celebration Sunday, 11:30 am A warm welcome awaits you! WheiPrity ex-husband, remarried four years later, Cyndi informed me that she wanted to live with her father and be part of a “real family." Lyle said he did- n't care where he lived as long as he was with his sister. Since I was still single and struggling, I consented. Two years later, I married a widower who had childrem the same age as mine. We took Cyndi and Lyle on vacations with us and helped them financially whenever we could. When Cyndi married five years ago, her father offered to give her a small wedding. After she-had spent a lot of her wn money, he informed her that he did not want me to attend. It was two weeks before the ceremony and she couldn't cancel it on such short notice. Cyndi and my ex-husband had some bitter arguments, and I was finally tallowed to attend the ceremony but not the dinner. She has not forgiven her father for the misery he caused. Several of my ex-husband's relatives told me how cruel they thought it was for him to. exclude me. My son Lyle said, "Don't feel bad, Mom. Some day you will be coming to MY wedding." Lyle is getting married next month, and he just phoned to tell me I will NOT be invited because he can't handle the "stress." I know my ex-husband will never forgive me for divorcing him, but this is a rotten way to get back at me. I am crushed by Lyle's rejection. Fhis morning I received a birthday card from Lyle. Should I send it back? — Miffed in Milwaukee Dear Milwaukee: The birthday card was the olive branch. I urge you not to send it back. Leave the door ajar and let Lyle take it from there. In my opinion, Lyle has some fence- mending to do, but since your ex-hus- band had the children in their formative years, it should pot be surprising that there is some distance between you. | hope time will narrow the gap and that you and your children will develop a warmer relationship. Good luck Dear Ann Landers: | can't believe | am writing to you but I have had it up to here with my husband. I will call him “Lloyd.” He is a successful professional man, a good father and a faithful husband (I would almost swear to it). We have been mammied for 34 years. Lloyd is 61; I am 58. The problem is that after two drinks he tells such filthy jokes I want to fall through the floor. To begin with, the man is no story- teller and the stories he tells are not funny -- just dirty. I wonder if the fact that he has been impotent for three years has something to do with it. Of course, No one in our crowd knows this, but I certainly do. Please respond in the paper, and don't print the name of my city. I would not want Lloyd to know I wrote Although he reads your column, he will not think this letter is about him. He doesn't consider his jokes dirty, just Na shade off- color." Thanks for your help. — Long-suffering Sue Dear Sue: These guys are hopeless It's usually the non-perforthers who tell the dirtiest jokes -- sort of a verbal sub- stitute for the real thing. Dear Ann Landers: Seven years ago, I became involved with a man who was an alcoholic and a drug addict. I thought I loved "Jeb" even though he cheated on me and refused to hold down a job. 4 Three years ago, we had a son. When I discovered Jeb was using drugs in front of our child, I said, "That's enough,” arid left him. Fortunately, my parents took us in with loving arms. I returned to college and demanded that Jeb pay child support. His visita- tions are si by me because of his substance abuse, but he can see his son any time he wants. He hasn't been around for four months, which is pretty conclusive evidence that he has no inter- est in the child. After a great deal of soul-searching, I decided to change my son's last name to mine. Jeb couldn't care less, but his par- ents are furious. They have told me that if their grandson's name is changed, they never want to see me or my son again. Am I wrong to do this, Ann? Do you think my son would want the name of a man he barely knows, a man who never was a father to him? My family: loves my son dearly, and so do 1. I think he would be proud to have our name Please give me your thoughts on this. — Single Parent in South Carolina Dear South Carolina: Jeb's parents have no business trying to manipulate you. If you want to change your child's last name, go ahead and do it. one LEO — July 23/August 23 If you keep your ideas from flying too high, ail should go well.
