Leni Normington was looking for two types of business people, those with good marketing skills and those with good financial skills. They could be current businesses owners or retired. Both of these areas are the ones we get the most requests for,” Mclvor said. Many of these new. CASE counselors also have their own to run. N ing a Castlegar area resident, is the owner of Streetfront Graphics, a graphics, sign and custom design company based in Nelson. She plans to continue running her busi- ness and be a CASE counselor. “First of all I'm on a roster with others and it’s not a full time job,” said Normington. When individual cases come up BDBC decides which coun- selor would be best depending ori the needs of the client. It might be a client with inventory or financial questions or someone who needs help expanding their c base or und ding the impact of technology. “A company that I might be involved with may want more clients,” said Normington. Strate- gies to help them outperform their competition and how to serve their clients more effectively would be part of Normington’s help. The Castlegar Rotary Club, in conjunction with Rotary Interna- tional and the Club’s Russian affiliate, is sponsoring an 18-year- old female student from the town of Magadan, Russia, to come to Canada for a one-year educational and cultural encounter. Eléna Zinchenko — a resident of eastern Russia, nearithe Pacific Ocean — will.be in the area for about a year, taking part in a vari- ety of activities designed to enrich her knowledge of her Canadian counterparts, while at the same time opening the eyes of West Kootenay residents to life in modern-day Russia. She arrives Wednesday morning at the Castlegar Airport. Kootenay West MP Jim Gouk, a long-time Castlegar Rotarian, says the club was very interested in getting a Russian student out to the area to interact with the local community — especially given its strong Russian roots. “With the former Iron Curtain countries now coming on line with Rotary, and opening them- selves up to the West, we thought it would be a great opportunity to bring someone from the former Soviet Union out to this region,” said Gouk. “But the thing is with these new countries, parents often can't afford to send their children, and even the local Rotary Clubs them- selves can't afford it.” To combat this situation, the plan was to have the Russians raise enough money to send Zinchenko to the West Coast via Alaska Airlines. From there, Castlegar Rotary would then pick up any incidental travel costs associated with getting her to Castlegar, But that wasn’t quite the way things turned out, 5 “She was going to fly across the Pacific from the east coast of Russia, but she had visa prob- lems, so she had to fly to Moscow,” said Gouk. “Rotary then raised the money to get her a ticket to Montreal aboard Aeroflot [the Russian airline}.” That was as far as the money went, though — leaving the local Rotary Club in a bit of a bind. “They phoned us and said, students will remain in Robson. Earlier this ‘year school offi- cials were trying to determine if they should add an after- noon kindergarten session in second kindergarten for Robson Robson. Now increased enrol- ment has resulted in the addi- tion of an afternoon class in The maximam students allowed per kindergarten class is 20. Farrell said that teacher, Michelle McDicken, will con- duct both classes. RCMP investigate break in Castlegar RCMP say a resi- dent in the 100 block of 10th Ave., waking to the ring of the door bell at 3:30 a.m. last Wednesday, found that there was no one there Upon closer inspection the res- ident notice that a security light bulb had been removed. That same morning in the 700 block of 10th Ave. a neighbor looking after a nearby residence while his neighbor was out of town discovered that the house had been broken into. Police say entry was gained by forcing the door, however, it's uncertain until the owner returns what exactly was stolen, if any- thing. Police are investigating. We weld anything...
