Ad ___- CASTLEGAR NEWS, January 20, 1982 Entertainment Releases Night Crossing | HOLLYWOOD (AP) — This month Walt Disney Productions will release ano- ther film aimed at improving the company’s image with adult moviegoers: Night Crossing, the real-life story of two East German families who flew to freedom in ao hot-air balloon, When the two young cou- ples and their four children landed in West Germany on Sept. 16, 1979, news of their exploits flashed around the world. Around the millions who read the news was the: wife of Disney producer Tom Leetch. “You're always cry- ing for a good story for a movie,” she told her husband. “Here it is.” Disney executive producer Ron Miller agreed, and with- in 24 hours negotiations be- gan with Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzél. “We weren't the first to ask,” producer Leetch recalled. “A Japanese company and others made offers, Fortunately, the re- nown of the Disney name ap- pealed to the Strelzyks and Wetzels.” Director Delbert Mann, Oscar winner for Marty ac- cepted the project with the proviso: “I. don't want! to . make the story into a Swiss Family Robinson.” The stu- dio readily agreed to his rea- Ustic approach. went to Munich to scout lo- cations. I visited Naila, where the baloon landed and where the Wetzels were’still living. The landing spot was within sight of the border, and I could see the broken branches of the trees where the balloon came down,” Obviously Night Crossing couldn't be filmed ‘in East Germany, so Disney enlisted Bavarian Studios to help find similar locations. Landsberg, 65 kilometres from Munich, became Poes- sneck, where the two families lived, and a $300,000 set was built at Eulenschwang to simulate the border. Leetch searched for a company to construct the balloons, finally found Balloon Ventures in Glendale, 10 minutes away from the, Disney studio. Seven baloons were built at. $160,000 apiece. An Anglo-American cast was signed: John Hurt, Beau Bridges, Jane Alexander, Glynnis O'Connor, Doug Mc- Keon, Ian Bannen. Filming was scheduled to begin in August, 1980, then the Screen Actors Guild went on strike. ‘We managed to hold on to the actors for two months until the strike was over,” Mann said. “But starting in early October meant-that we would be fighting the on- i, coming winter.
