Wednesday, December 9, 1992 Peter Makortoff passed away Dec. 3, 1992. Peter was born Dec. 26, 1935 to Peter and Mary Makortoff. He was the eldest of three children. He had one brother, George and one sis- ter, Patsy Woykin. He grew up in the North Fork Valley, north of Grand Forks, attending the Kettle River North School. He first went to work full- time at the age of 16, working in a small horse logging oper- ation. He worked for various small logging companies for acouple of years before hiring on with a much bigger log- ging company in Greenwood. In 1956, the family moved from the North Fork to the area near where the airport is now south of Grand Forks, Ann Markin whom he mar- ried two years later on April 5, 1958. They have two sons, James, born Feb. 25, 1960 and Fredrick, born May 30, 1961. It was while he was work- ing for this logging company that he had his first taste of unionism — serving as shop steward. In October of 1964 he gained employment with the -then village of Kinnaird. Af- ter the amalgamation of Kin- naird and Castlegar he be- came employed by the City of Castlegar specializing in wa- ter and waste. At this time, he completed _IN MEMORY _ testing. He also gained all the certification possible in the field of water and waste, and it was here that he became involved with the labor move- ment. It was a natural step for Peter because he believed in fairness and the need to im- prove the human condition here on earth. Even as a youngster he despised dis- crimination. He believed in the common good, but he also believed in individual rights. Individual rights that do not infringe on anyone else’s rights. To achieve this end to any degree, the only vehicle open to him was the labor move- This path is also full of frustration, for, not only does one have to oppose the em- ployer to gain better working conditions and wages and sometimes human dignity it- self, but one also has to put up with human pettiness as well. Those that are never satisfied. The back stabbers that feel that by tearing down someone they will somehow gain. It is people like Peter, the unsung and mostly unrecog- nized, that are the true heroes of human progress. Peter was also a family man. He loved his family. In spite of all of his responsibil- ities he had time to go camp- ing and fishing with his wife and sons. They all loved camping. rtoff, two nephews, and his father-in-law Mike Markin. He is survived by wife Ann, sons James and Fredrick, their wives Ellen and Janet and his grandchil- dren Karina and Christo- pher. He is also survived by mother Mary Makortoff, mother in-law Nora Markin, brother George and his wife Carolyn Makortoff, sister Patsy and husband Tom Woykin and brother in law Mickey and wife Connie Markin, one niece and five nephews.
