THE TORONTO Dominion Bank plans to close its
Nelson branch for good on March 21.

A bank spokesman says the branch hasn't generated
enough revenue to make it economic. As well, he says
TD's head office doesn’t foresee a sufficient recovery of
the Nelson economy in the near future to keep the branch
open.

Small businesses
to get more timber

NELSON (CP) — More timber will be offered to small
logging and milling business in the West Kootenay this year,
regional forest manager John Cuthbert said Monday.

Cuthbert was responding to demands from the newly-
formed West Koot A jation of Loggers
and Mill Operators for more timber and faster service from
forestry officials.

Cuthbert agreed with members of the association that
there had been “a farily sizeable undercut in the timber
supply this year” by major timber quota holders. To
demands that 50,000 cubic metres of Westar Timber's
undercut be made available, Cuthbert said he hoped to “get
up to 100,000 or more” cubic metres from the region into this
year’s Small Business Program.

Cuthbert said Westar’s licence in the Nelson region
would either be surrendered by the company or led b;

PM ‘knew of Coates scandal

OTTAWA (CP) — Prime Minister Brian Mulroney said
today he was informed Jan. 22 of allegations that national
security might have been breached by Defence Minister
Robert Coates’ evening out on Nov. 29 at a West German bar
that features nude dancers and prostitutes.

“This matter with an allegation involving an alleged
breach of national security was brought to my attention, the
first time, on Jan. 22 by the secretary to the cabinet (Gordon
Osbaldeston),” Mulroney told reporters.

Mulroney said he “immediately initiated a security
review and received the assurance that there was no breach
of security.”

The prime minister said he alsé “instructed the minister
of national defence to be in my office for a meeting within
hours,” where Coates “confirmed” there had been no
security breach “from his point of view.”

Mulroney said there were other “security inquiries of an
ongoing nature undertaken at my request,” the results of
which were eventually handed over to Osbaldeston and
which confirmed again there had been no breach of security.

of the cabinet (Tuesday) at noon (just hours before Coates

MAN OF HONOR

Asked why Coates resigned even though security
hadn't been breached by the visit to the bar, Mulroney said:

“Mr. Coates is a man of honor. He is a believer in British
parliamentary traditions and he felt that for him to pursue
his rights before the courts in a proper manner that his
resignation from the government would be appropriate. He
submitted his resignation to me as an honorable man and I
accepted it.”

Coates said Tuesday he would be launching legal action
against the Ottawa Citizen, which broke the story.

Queried on why he was not informed of the incident
before Jan. 22, Mulroney replied “because there was no
breach of security.” Asked why he was then informed on
Jan. 22, he said: “I don't know.”

But Mulroney noted that rumors of the incident had
been widely circulated amoung reporters for days.

‘The dramatic Commons resignation by Coates, his voice

rumors about events that occurred in Lahr, West Germany,
last Nov. 29, when the minister together with political chief
of staff Richard Logan and press aide Jeff Matthews went to
