Small businesses to get more timber NELSON (CP) — More timber will be offered to small logging and milling business in the West Kootenay this year, regional forest manager John Cuthbert said Monday. Cuthbert was responding to demands from the newly- formed West Koot A jation of Loggers and Mill Operators for more timber and faster service from forestry officials. Cuthbert agreed with members of the association that there had been “a farily sizeable undercut in the timber supply this year” by major timber quota holders. To demands that 50,000 cubic metres of Westar Timber's undercut be made available, Cuthbert said he hoped to “get up to 100,000 or more” cubic metres from the region into this year’s Small Business Program. Cuthbert said Westar’s licence in the Nelson region would either be surrendered by the company or led b; saved for a new Nelson mill be temporarily let out to 4mall operators until the new mill is operating. Blackwood said MacPherson was sympathetic to the association's concerns, but told Blackwood the ministry wants to maintain as big a block.as possible for a large mill “to get Nelson back on its feet.” Blackwood said three medium-sized mills en employ Je than one big high-technology mill. me Within the West Kootenay Association, there is debate on whether there is enough timber for another large mill to come in. Forester Dave Duncan says that some small mill owners want a major quota holder in the region. Others said the increase in small operators is increasing the competition for logs, mostly because there are no other the Forests Ministry soon, but a new operation would still take at least a year to harvest wood. Assogiation presi Robert Blackwood met with deputy forest minister Paul MacPherson on Monday to ask that portions of the 310,000-cubic-metre quota that is being jobs Cuthbert said if another mill started up, many who are trying to operate small business would go back to jobs as employees. He said smaller operations require more forest service staff for silviculture, timber cruising and road work than major timber quota holders do.
