Personal rights and free- doms have been at the centre of many wars, revolts, acts of civil disobedience and public demonstrations and certainly it would seem that over the years many of these have been just causes worth the cost. I am thinking about civil wars fought against oppres- sive regimes, marches to protest unfair treatment be- cause of color or creed and oth- er causes where people in bondage or oppression are fighting for fundamental rights or freedoms. We all, as we watch on TV or read in newspapers and magazines, find ourselves forming personal opinions but many times our questions should be at what cost do these rights and freedoms come? We now live in a society in Pulpit & Pew Castlegar: Full Gospel Fellowship Rev. Stan BLOCK Canada where freedoms and rights are at an all time high and guaranteed by constitu- tion too. What a happy state or is it? We are freed from the work ethic that our parents held to by a set of social security ben- efits that encourage depen- dency not independence. I ask you which is freedom in your mind. We are freed from all sexu- al constraints — yes the bar- riers are down anything goes, no censorship, no more re- strictive marriage vows for many in this generation. Oh yes, we do have an ugly little thing called STD (sexu- ally transmitted diseases) and yes perhaps some people are hurt in our quest for free ex- pression in this area (ie: women, children, both born and unborn — oh well, at least we have our freedom). This generation is free from the need to conform. “I gotta be me,” “I did it my way” are musical expressions of this theme. The important vows are “my” views if there is dishar- mony at home, leave. Respect for elders, those in authority and even peers what outdated ideas. Those things only restrict my rights and infringe on my freedoms. So what if it costs me impor- tant relationships with family, parents, wife or husband and friends, they can be replaced. John 8:32 says “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free”. Verse 36 says “If the Son therefore shall make you free ‘I submit to you that true freedom does have boundaries and is always considerate of others. Can we improve on truth?’ Can't they? I could go on to talk about many other issues and I do not wish to pick on any group or individual I merely want to draw our attention to the costs attached to many of our so called freedoms. Perhaps by taking away the rules, guidance, moral ab- solutes and the loosening of authority in the home, school and work we have become like a well built ship steaming full speed ahead with no rudder and a multitude of navigators. you shall be free indeed.” I submit to you that true freedom does have boundaries and is always considerate of others. Can we improve on truth? Does truth — truth — change? Perhaps you are caught in a trap which you thought was the way to freedom and you find yourself in more bondage now, well Jesus Christ is the way to real freedom put his word to the test he will not dis- appoint you. absolute Answers to today’s Crossword Puzzle and Cryptoquip T Pp s cio N m|]>|o|z|> Z/O|=|m)- H f) P 8 R mi-lolmimiz Dimim) Zz) o >| —|D) OREO) Dim) vj vmio DD OROBO BSEs O} D| >| 4B) O/}O} 0} 4 O] = N MOR WEE OQ} m/ I) Oo} — G Ss B L U N T DBO BOEOD SHE || MORE Om r-| >| ORE |>im D Z| O]O| >| SR Dim) 4|0| > Rm) oj O}—|z =| >}O} O}r- LS P [e) R 4 O|m|-4/>/Ol- OR =| fo} SHES SSOO SE0N OWED ~|z|m|z|—[o|m| off o|clo ii mo/>/ m| >|) 1 t E Ss a A R n 4 | mM) 4] >|-4|O RE m0] Oir-|m | m| | m| Of Dim) imio o|m|z|—|>|a|4| of -|m| x z|>|m} alo} aicim M)O| > BE Ol Zir-| >|) VEE] O|—|D| CORE >| —/0 >| rim) 4a D oir Ss O [>| O|>|OR | m z H U 3 Ww ASKED THE AVID SURFER: “HO' TODAY?"
