The most important part of the city
council proveeding last evening so far as
the pay are was the re-
port of the city treasurer. It showed
the receipts for January amounted to
$8,974.40, in which the largest amount
was $8,110 for liquor licenses. For Feh-
ruary the receipts were $1,278.25. The
disbureements for the two months
amounted to $4,108.18, of which $2,506.-
49 was expended in January and $2,696.- Ps
80 in February.
The bank account on February 28 waa
$17,498.64, and the cash on hand $858.73,
making a total of $17,857.37,
Alderman Hvoson wanted to know
what had become of the $34,000 borrowed Sold by Goodeve Brothers,
for street improvevement last year and z ~
suid he thought somo of it had been ex-
pended for shoveling snow. Alderman
Lalonde answered that he thought that
was as ‘much a part of street improyé-
ment as anything elee that had been
done, but promised to answer Mr.
Hooson’s question at the next meeting.
The finance committee recommended
the payment of accounts ‘o the amount
of $8,360, which included the salary pay
roll for February.
Superintendant of streets was in
structed to repair dangerous portions of
Le Roiavenue, upon the guggestion of
Alderman Clute.
As the city solicitor had not proposed
hia opinion as to the legality of the per-
mission given the Bank of Montreal by
the city council to uses portion of the
sidewalk for an entrance to the new
bank building, the matter was passed
until the next meeting. £

open on the Sabbath and Alderman}
Hooson bad agreed to introduce it, but
as no petition had been presented the
matter went over.
Inspector Forteath asked for a new
box for the garbage wagon and the ap-
pointment of Joseph Stussi as driver at
a salary of $75 a month, and beth were
granted,
Alderman McCrae asked for a leave of
absence, as he was going east for a
month, which was regarded as not nec-
essary for so short.a time,
