Kim Hayashi will be instruct- ing the course. Register at the Recreation centre. MARILYN MATHIESON cerning the new RCMP building, chances are they will also be asked to choose who should replace Councillor Marilyn Mathieson, who has informally announced her resignation. “Any time a city holds a refer- endum or election, it rans a cost of about $5,000 once all the dmini ‘ive work is plet- ed. I'd like to see the by-election held the same time as the upcom- ing referendum, since it would save the city some money,” Mathieson said. A Fall by-election would also coincide with her own moving plans. Mathieson and her hus- band Stuart are relocating to North Vancouver, where he has been transfered to Cominco’s corporate office. The most expen- Sive option was a five phase renovation of the hill, including Straightening, improved sig- nage, arrestor beds, and an improved run-off lane “Why would we want to spend $15 million to have a short term solution?” said the minister. Instead the plan is to improve the brake-check stop at the top of the hill, as well as the signage on the entire route, and improvement to the hill’s run- off lane “There will be major infor- mation [along the route] to make sure truckers do not take the Warfield road accidentally,” said the Minister. Most of the big rig accidents that have occurred on the highway were the result of truckers, unfamiliar with the route, taking the wrong route The signage would include a notice about the hill at the junc- tion of Highways 3B and 3, as well as a diagram about the hill, and notice signs all the way down the hill to inform drivers on speeds, grades, and remain- ing distance. Another important compo- nent will be stricter enforce- ment of the rules of the road on the hill, something the minister said he will be discussing with the Attorney General's depart- ment The minister will be meeting again with the mayors, and rep- Tesentatives of trucking compa- nies, in four or five months, after a rerouting proposal by the Warfield mayor is costed out, as well as an investigation into the value of arrestor beds. Come together “We'll resolve [these ques- tions] and make a decision at that time,” said Charbonneau Local MLA Ed Conroy said he was pleased with the meet- ing, and said that the Minister had shown real concern for issues in the area by attending the meeting. Charbonneau was in Castlegar last weekend to attend a wedding, and took the time to look around the area. “It helps him to understand the problems we have in the area,” said Conroy. “I’m using every opportunity I have to appraise him of the problems we need addressed here in this constituency.” Conroy, who had supported Te-routing traffic through Castlegar, added that the deci- sion made at the meeting was the best one possible. “We're going to wind up with everyone happy.” Quote/Unquote “No.” —Transportation and Highways Minister Art Charbonneau when asked if the Robson- Castlegar Ferry will ever be retumed to this area.
