Photos and story Sharlene Imhoff he letter carriers of Castlegar, and every weekday they embark on a mini-marathon to ensure that local residents get their mail—on time—every time Letter Carrier Matt Gallo shared part of his day with The Castlegar Sun, and spoke to us about the good, the bad—and the downright ugly about his job—which he has held since 1974. First the good, which by the way outweighs both the bad and the ugly—hands down, Gallo loves his job, or he wouldn't still be trekking between eight and 10 miles around town, day after day, after almost 19 es being outdoors, and he loves people, which is why he has a smile,-a nod, or a wave for everyone who drives by while he's on his route. Gallo is quick on his feet, (a real speedwalker in uniform), but when delivering mail to businesses along Columbia Avenue, he takes the time for quick chit-chat. In fact, while on the job, everything Gallo does is done quickly—fast walk, and fast talk Needless to say, whether it's the latest gossip around town, or the most recent hockey scores— Gallo has the inside track Now the bad—which is usually December through to February—or whenever a lot of snow and cold weather hits the region. The number of miles Gallo walks in a day increases substantially, since his usual “short cuts’ are blocked by snow or ice. Gallo praised the Canada Post Corpo- ration for supplying warm clothing that protects him against the ele- ments, but sometimes the cold seeps in anyway, and at the end ofa long day, walking in sub-zero temperatures, Gallo says his legs are numb and a warm bath is an essential Now for the ugly. Big dogs with bad bites Throughout his 19 years of service, Gallo has been bitten five times. He jokes about it though, and says the tetanus shots he receives afterwards are often worse than the bites. si Whether the temperature is 20-above or 20. below, Gallo takes some extra precautions, which protects both himself, and the people to whom he is delivering too. For example, Gallo said he would never leave a Parcel outside someone's door, or even stic king out of their mailbox if the owners were not home. “Leaving a parcel outside can be an open invitation to a potential break-in, since it suggests that no one is home.” Gallo delivers approximately seven bags of mail each day through the duration of his route. Each bag is an average of 20 Ibs. Throughout Christmas however, the amount of bags delivered can double, but the maximum he is allowed to carry at one time on his route is 35 Ibs. But Gallo doesn't just deliver the mail By 7 a.m. each morning he's at the Post Office with other carriers helping to sort and bag the mail When his in-house tasks are finished, he takes a quick coffee break before hitting the streets Gallo holds a lot of pride in his job, which by now, has become a way of life for him. In fact, there's probably only two things Gallo wish- es he could change about his job 4 minimal amount of snowfall each winter, and all dogs would have chains T y Tequire speed, agility, and a good sense of humor. ‘They’
