The Regional District of Central Kootenay board has agreed to spend more than $25,000 on a variety of small projects around the complex. A bulldozer two days last week levelling fill for the new field and on Thursday survey crews were on site to i how much topsoil will be needed. The Castlegar Selkirk Lions Club is spearheading the con- struction of the soccer field, along with other major improve- ments to Pass Creek Park. Lions’ spokesman Mark Zarek said the club spent more than $2,000 to level the field. However, most of the work on the park is being done by volun- teers because February's federal budget cut back on many of the summer works programs. “Everything is being done with volunteer help because we didn't get any works grants,” explained Zurek. Still, he said the service club has received support from local contractors. He points to last month's work on the pond at Pass Creek Park, which saw truckloads of sand hauled in to the beach area. “All the sand was hauled through donations,” said Zurek. donated their Saturday to bring in the sand and Lions Club vol- unteers then built a new culvert and drainage system and graded the beach. Ken Wyllie, the director for the Lower Arrow Columbia elec- toral area, has asked the Regional District of Central Kootenay to investigate upgrading street light- ing in more densely populated areas or at intersections with heavier use. “We're not talking about intensive street lighting,” Wyllie explained in an interview with The Castlegar Sun. “A real good example is Marshall Road and Broadwater Road.” Wyllie said the regional dis- trict study would “try and identi- fy key areas of public access.” In a memorandum to the regional district staff, Wyllie said that funding for the new street lights could come in part from the electoral area’s B.C.
