Indeed the word would only have ‘to be passed across the line for Canadians to join in the reliet. But as the citizens of the United States are doing every- thing necessary to care for the des- titute, the government itself having taken up the matter, nothing re- mains for us at this far distance ex- cept to express our sorrow and reach out a hand of brotherly sym- pathy for the distressed and the beréaved. CUSTOMS HOUSE TROUBLES Baggage men and customs house officers have all kinds of adventures ia aquiet way. True, they have not the excitement of revenue cut- ters in chasing smugglers, but after all they probably see more of the picturesque side of lite. THE GALVESTON HORROR- The terrible flood at Galveston is almost without a parallel among the tragedies of medern times. The details of the awful catastrophe have been set forth in the telegraph- ic dispatches as printed in the Rec- oRv from day to day, and they are all the more appalling and heart tending from the fact that they at- tempt no word painting or fine writ- ing, but confine themselves in the main to bare statistics. The wreckage of property alone would constitute the event an epochal one in the disasters of the century. No one who has visited Galveston can have failed to admire the magnificent drive along the gulf, one of the finest in the world, and the stately residences and solid business blocks which have been the pride of the city. As if by the wand of some evil genius these have been blotted out of existence, and the fi ial loss iled takes she ght a collection of birds and two dogs consigned to C. D. Bunker, a well known customs broker.. He went down to the steamer on her arrival to claim his menagerie; but he didn’t get it at Ponce. In fact he hasn’t got all of it yet. A cold-blooded government offi- cer sent the two dogs to Angel island, where they will be kept for two weeks at government expense, The broker was obliged to tele- graph to Washington city for per- mission to land the stock, and even then he had to give bond that the birds would not be taken out of the city. Allof which red tape is the result of a recent order from the secretary of the treasury to the ef- fect that all birds and animals ar- riving from foreign ports must be given a clean bill of health before they are allowed to land. THE LIBERAL CANDIDATE. Mr. Galliher, the candidate se- lected to uphold the Liberal standard in this constituency, says the Vernon News is unknown per- sonally tu us—and for that matter to almost everyone else outside of his immediate vicinity—but we have heard that heis well liked by those who are acquainted with him., It may be taken for granted that he is possessed of many amiable characteristics, otherwise he could hardly have been good natured enough to assume the thankless task which he has under- taken. ‘That his nomination does not <“ogether meet with approval among members of his own party may be assumed when such re- tnarks concerning the action ot the convention appear in such a strong Liberal _ paper as the Rossland Miner, which among other things says: ‘‘Mr. Galliher’s nomination willbe learned with surprise by the electors throughout the riding. He is hardly known beyond the limits of the corporation of Nelson; he has never.had any political ex- perience, and the electors are utter- ‘ly in the dark as to his qualifica- tions. It surely,” adds the Miner, “would have been wiser for the rauk with the great fire in Chicago as one of the greatest of the age. But the pallef gloom would be less deep it the hungry waves of the gulf had swallowed only brick and mortar, piers and buildings and ty homes. This were bad encugh in- deed. But it isin the loss of hu- mar lite that the food appeals most strongly to the world which has read of its ravages with a.shudder, Many a decisive battle of history has been fought with smaller loss of life. One’ can not read the press to have found some man who was more widely known, and whom the voters could have cast their ballots for with a reasonable assurance that he was one who would fulfill the expectations which should always be entertained for a member of the House of Com. mons.” From this it is reasonable to infer that Mr. Galliher has been brought out simply as a last resort, and while his party should be grateful to him for thus filling the vont} it will require pretty hard work to induce theel to end these- lection of the Revelstoke gathering. Mr. Bostock, had he again been a candidate, would, we think, have been defeated, and. the chances of success for the new candidate are very much smaller than our present representative at Ottawa would have held. - + Opera House..
