I AS I SEE IT WITH HARRY PEPPER Little League President Don Holmes called on Sunday night to tell me that the baseball organization will hold its annual meeting on the evening of March 29th in the city council chambers at 7 p.m. He is hoping that there will be a substantial turnout for this meeting as two previous gettogether meetings have failed because of lack of attendance . He is asking that everyone interested in baseball , Little League variety, should give some thought to attending . While on the subject of Little League and former Little Leaguers around Rossland , a recent writeup in the Vancouver Sun reports that Mike Haley, third son of Mr . and Mrs . Joe Haley of Rossland , has signed a two-year pact with the B.C. Lions . For the past few years Mike has attended Boise State College in Idaho and has played football during all those years . I never had the pleasure of watching Mike play football , but if he plays it the way he played Little League ball, he will be something to watch and I for one.will b~ looking forward to seeing him in action when the Lions' season opens . Mike played)lis firstfootball in Kelowna where he attended Immaculata High School and progressed to Boise State where he had some good seasons before a knee injury forced him to the sidelines. Now recovered, his performance in camp caused coach Jackie Parker of the Lions to say , " If I asked him to run through a brick wall he' s probably do so." It's quite probable that our area 's first representative in the Canadian Football League could turn out to be quite an attraction. Well , the Kootenay ' s first representative Intermediate Hockey team to visit the Methodist University at ,Anchorage, Alaska didn't win any games but they did have a good trip and did appear on the local T. V. circuit in the northernmost of the United States . ing words that filtered back here of a 5000 capacity rink , full for most games , this must have been quite a let-down . Jimmy said that the fans he talked to on the trip were really impressed with the play of the Junior Warriors big centreman , Jimmy Stuart, who was along to bolster the team , and also with the play of " Long John" Christianson in the nets for Rossland. The 1971-72 Kootenay Junior Hockey title is today in the possession of the Cranbrook Colts, a team which during the seasen has proven that they would be hard to beat when the chips are down . I am reminded of the last game they played in Rossland when they dressed only ten players and played to a 2-2 tie in regulation time , and broke the tie in just a couple of minutes into the overtime . They certainly did a work manlike job on Roy Casler 's Junior Smokies with scores of 9-3 and 7-4 , and I' m told that they played without the services of starry young Derek Spring . I guess it 's crazy to make comparisons at this time , but I cannot help feeling that had the Warriors been able to ice their top team in the Trail series , and played the hockey which they earlier proved themselves capable of, a Rossland-Cranbrook series would have been somewhat closer to what a hockey final should be. I don 't know how many people caught the news flashes of the final Spokane-Cranbrook Sen ior series on Monday evening , but one thing stuck in my craw in the newscast and that was Ed Sharman 's catty remarks about the possibility of Cranbrook coming up with more protests to lengthen the series. When a sportscaster on a network with almost national The opening game ended in a 6- 3 loss and after a Saturday spent sightseeing, the boys learned they were to be on television and what with one thing and another the team must have tightened up, with the result they took a real hammering, something like 12-3 . Sunday's game was the best, and the U.S. team had to come from behind to win it 6-4 and after it was over the boys returned to Seattle and arrived back in Rossland around 5 p.m. on Monday . In his phone report on the trip , Manager Jim Williams told me that the Arena in which the team played would compare favorably with Castlegar' s present facilities . After the glow- coverage has to resort to that sort of thing , it doesn't shine up the already tarnished image of the Spokane hockey team . It seems they would do almost anything to win . ·-AS I S-EE ·1T WITH HARRY PEPPER Last Friday evening the second annual Play-For-Fun Banquet and Cabaret was held at the 1.O.O.F. Hall and I really don't know what we will be able to do for an encore if these parties keep increasing in popularity. We thought last year was the best ever but this year's even topped it, not only in attendance but also in fun for everyone there. Refreshments were being served when we arrived on the scene , that is, the wife and I, along with Kenny and Barbara Stanton, and after a few drinks we sat down to a bang-up supper prepared and served by Rebekah ladies . After having partaken of two of these suppers in a short time I'm convinced y_ou 'll get no better meal and service than these ladies dish up . The tables were loaded with good food and around 120 guests proceeded to unload them . After the meal the tables were moved back to allow room for dancing to the music of the " Country Squires" and anyone who has ever danced to the music they play will agree that one would go a long way before getting any better. During the course of the evening we were treated to a couple of renditions from Tom Jones, the Pateson boy who is a great favorite in these parts and a member of our play-for-fun league . The only sour note in the whole night , for me, that ,is , occurred as we wended our cheerful way homeward . The wife had the misfortune to slip and fall and she suffered a badly broken ankle, which will keep her off her feet for some months . I would like to suggest to anyone who would like to become a member of this entertaining organization, during the winter, to get your name on the list of prospective members . Come next fall , after a summ er spent among good guys enjoying themselves , you too can be eli gible to attend the third annual get-together. You 'll never regret it. Well it' s getting close to the time for me to write my Christmas greeting column, have to start working on that in the next week or so. In the meantime I am going to try to take a few of the Junior Warriors at a time and salute them through this column. Maybe next week I'll get sta rted on that.
