Menopause in Women Affected by Smoking Women who smoke under- go menopause sooner than non- smokers, a survey of 67,000 hospital patients in seven coun- tries shows. The report in the current issue of the Lancet, a Brilish medical weekly, was based on a survey of 25,000 patients in the Boston area and a survey of 92,000 persons at hospitals in the United States, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Scotland, Italy and West Germany. It said that at each age between 44 and 53, 35 per cent of women undergoing meno- pause had never smoked while 49 per cent smoked one pack of cigarettes or more a day. The proportion who smoked half a pack a day was midway between former smok- ers and those who smoked one pack or more a day, the report said. Consumer Facts The average age for the onset of menopause, the so- called change of life when a woman stops menstruating, is about 50, The findings were con- sistent in each of the seven countries, said the report by Business Opportunity Steel buikting company is looking for a dealer agent in the local area. Morrison of the Harvard School of Public Health, said it was the first report on the relation of meno- pause to cigarette smoking, Energy-Saving Cooking. The energy crisis has made the subject of energy-saving cooking more than just idle conversation. Today's home- makers are very concerned with ways to save money in the kitchen because they have to “be. There are real ways to achieve energy-saving efficien- cies. Legumes or, dried fruits should be soaked also to reduce cooking time. Convenience foods such as prepared spaghetti sauce would certainly help the cause, al- though you may prefer your own special sauce. Oriental stir-fry cooking is not only intriguing as a change- of-pace menu idea, it is more energy efficient and nutritious than boiling or steaming. Remember, preheating the oven is generally wasteful except for ‘quickbake’ items such as cookies, pizza and frozen entrees. Make an effort to thaw food at least partially before cooking. Don’t try to incor- porate thawing time into cook- ing time. This is a sure energy waster. These energy-saving hints are proof that there are indeed ways to save fuel money in the kitchen. In a statement, Connors countered various reports which suggested that his reenrd sales. were not sufficient to warrant a nomination, or that he stepped down to make room for a new artist who might otherwise not have a chance at the award. “My sales in 1977 were amongst (those of} the five top country male vocalists in Can- ada and the books of Boot Records (his label) are open for the appropriate parties to ver- ify, should they so desire,” Connors said. The Movie Star Trek. : The Star Trek motion picture, which has been floating in space nearly as long as the starship Enterprise, has finally reached a friendly planet. The original cast of the Star Trek television series—in- cluding William Shatner as Captain Kirk, and, at last, Leonard Nimoy as the emotion- less, pointy-eared Vulcan Mr. Spock—has been assembled for the motion picture that may have, if not the largest audience ‘waiting in the history of the industry, certainly the most loyal. Michael Eisner, president of Paramount Pictures, said demands from Star Trek fans around the world had caused the studio to reach agreement with everyone for the movie. He said that—with extensive special effects—it would cost more than all the original 79 TV episodes. That would place the * budget at about $15 million. Production of the movie was announced at a news conference that was a media event in itself, not unlike a’ mini-version of the 30 annual Star Trek conventions. It at- tracted more than 200 report- ers. : Nimoy denied that he was a holdout from the movie cast, saying it had been “a ‘compli- cated relationship with Para- mount: for the last several * years.” ‘The Star Trek series, on NBC from 1966 to 1969, has been one of the most profitable ever placed into syndication, shown on 160 U.S. stations and in 51 other’ countries. But Paramount reportedly had not spread the profits around. Police said the Selkirk Col- lege aviation students’ wind-up party Saturday was apparently uneventful, but reported the destruction and theft.of several traffic signs at the Castlegar Airport and the theft of an airport truck for a joyriding trip the same evening. _Depends How Hard ‘Finally Gets Beamed Up ‘is believed to have been a major reason for the delay in assem- bling the original cast. The movie will be directed by Robert Wise and produced by Gene Roddenberry, creator of the TV series. The Starship Enterprise, namesake of the first U.S. space shuttle, is being assem- bled on four sound stages at Paramount. Book Review As to his reported wish to | give new artists a chance, “that was one reason for my with- drawal, but not the key rea- son.” My key reason is that I disagree with the qualifications CARAS has set down for the possible nominees,” Connors criticized the practice of nominating “turn- coal Canadians"—a term he used to describe artists who have taken up permanent resi- dence in the United States and conduct most of their business there—for Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards in the U.S. In previous years, Cana- dian artists like Joni Mitchell and Paul Anka, whose’ careers have grown and flourished through their almost-exclusive work in the U.S., have qualified for Juno nominations. Last year singer Burton Cummings, who has relocated to Los Angeles from Winnipeg, won two Junos. Connors, who did not men- tion any names, said he feels that artists who choose to five in the U.S, and conduct their business there “should compete with their fellow Americans for the Grammy Awards and leave the Juno competitions to those who are living in Canada and conducting business in Can- ada.” Connors, a multi-Juno win- ner for best male country and western performer, said artists repeatedly are nominated for categories to which their music styles do not correspond. ~The Hog Book THE HOG BOOK. By William Hedgepeth: Doubleday Canada Ltd., Toronto. 288 pp. Paper $7.95, view PERCY uapBux Hogs have been on earth about 45 million years, but were domesticated only about 5,000 years ago by the Chinese. So William Hedgepeth tells us ina large volume of hog lore, speculating on the origin and the future of the hog, recount- ing superstitions and attitudes, describing the way hogs are slaughtered, and providing the reader with many amusing anecdotes and witty observa- tions, The subject is really cov- ered in greater length than necessary and all too often the reader gets the feeling that the author is making too much of an effort—often in vain—to be funny. Throughout the book there runs a very coarse narrative of two men taking a truck load of pigs to market. Hedgepeth’s porcine story would be more coherent if it ‘were not fre- quently interrupted by this irrelevancy. Advertising -helps permanent. Qualifications: youth. Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the South African heart trans- plant pioneer who headed the team that performed the oper- ation at Cape Town's Groate Schuur hospital, defended the transplant as a “last-resort” bid to save Marilena Mattiuzzo Portello, 26, Dr. Barnard said he re- ceived permission from the husband, Gianni Portello, 27, for the operation and that the woman faced certain death without it. “If the heart team had not done this kind of transplant my wife would be alive today,” Portello said in an interview in the English-language news- paper The Citizen, “I do not want to point a finger at anyone in particular, but I say once more, I am convinced something went wrong with that operation,” the newspaper quotes him as say? ing. : Dr. Barnard said in Londo that no human donor was available at the time of the transplant. “It was a very acute emergency and a human heart was not available. So I used & baboon's heart in the hope that either the patient's heart would recover or that the baboon, heart’ would support it untif such time as I could get a human heart to use. “In this particular case the patient’s own heart was so bad, that it just stopped working 512 hours later and the baboon's, heart was too small to carry the circulation alone.
