Soviet Union and into first place at the world junior hockey championship Saturday. Canada is undefeated after five games while Czechoslovakia and Finland, who tied 1-1 Saturday, are one point back with four wins and one tie. The Soviets fell to fourth place at 4-1. Canada meets Finland and Czechoslovakia goes against the Soviets on Monday. “Our idea was to stand up at the blueline and force them to the outside,” said Sherry Bassen, Team Canada’s director of player personnel. “And our guys played it perfectly.” Canada killed six consecutive penalties and led 2-0 going to the third period before breaking the game open with three goals in a span of one minute and 52 seconds. Canada killed eight penalties overall in the game. Dan Hodgson scored twice for Canada while Bob Bassen, Adam Creighton and Brian Bradley had one apiece. “It's the best win I've ever had in my life,” said Brad Berry, outstanding on the Canadian defence. “You couldn't believe the feeling that we have in our dressing room now. “We're so close to winning the whole thing. We are just going to go all out for the next two games against the Finns and Czechs. “The defence played really great. A lot of credit has to go to Billy (Craig Billington, the goaltender) and to the forwards. If it wasn't for the forwards coming back, our defence would have been in trouble and we couldn't have stood up. It was just a great all-round effort.” Billington made 16 saves, eight in the second period when Finnish referee Jarmo Jalarvo handed Canada four unanswered penalties. Canada surprises Soviets “Td be lying if I said I wasn't nervous,” said Billington. “Our penalty killing was just super and the team played incredibly in front of me.” The Soviets pressed the Canadians for the first five minutes of the game, but Canada withstood a tripping penalty to Jeff Jackson of Hamilton Steelhawks and began to take control of the game It was during the Jackson penalty that Canada established its ability to keep the Soviet shooters outside of the slot. Billington did not have to make a save as the Canadian penalty killers, led by Bassen, of Medicine Hat Tigers, and Berry, of North Dakota State, sealed off the Soviets’ favorite routes of attack through the middle. Bassen scored in the 13th-minute after a tremendous check in the corner thrown by Wendel Clark of Saskatoon Blades. Clark passed to Bassen in the high slot, who ripped a shot past Soviet goalie Evgeny Belosheikin Hodgson, of Prince Albert Raiders, took a pass from Claude Lemieux of Verdun Juniors just 35 seconds after Bassen’s goal, cut into the crease, taking Belosheikin with him, and flipped a backhand high into the net to give Canada a 2-0 lead. Later in the period, Lemieux could not ram home a loose puck with an empty net glaring at him. Canada outshot the Soviets 10-4 in the first period, with Billington’s only real test a shot from the blueline by Oleg Posmetjev TOOK THE PLAY The second period was dominated in territorial play by the Soviets, mainly on the strength of four minor penalties incurred by the Canadians. Canada withstood the Soviet attack, and by the fourth penalty it was the Soviet club being called for icing Billington made two big saves on V. Kamensky, who broke around a defenceman for a clear shot.
