Just before the mystic hour of 12, dark and strange shadows could be seen lurk- ing in the dark alleys and byways, and one'by one a shrouded figure, phan- like andwierd, darted into the sacred con- clave in the room selected for the meet- ing. MEETING OF GONDOLENGE Buy and Sell Brorltog Eciererpey en and :Cable door, gave the balance of the password, “A Kicker.” It could readily be seen that no one was @ stranger among them, for they had ‘‘all been there before, many’s the time.” Smith Curtis, who seemed to be the central figure arose and said; “My heart is grievous sore. Oh, that Tcould recall my statement made at Dominion hall last Saturday night. You all remember that I said the result of the election would be an indorsement or repudiation of the Mayor and the acts of the city counci.,’’ (hear, hear.) “Don’t say ’*hear, hear,’ for I am sore at heart. But no matter what happens or what is done by the foolish people, I am for Smith Cartis, first last and all the time.{ hear hear!] Brother Kickers: the people are not with us, that is plain. It now behoves us to organize a more secret and more compact body of deter- mined Kickers. I have thought long and loud upon this subject and have concluded that it is beet to organize a war council consisting of ten chiefs. While delving into the archives of histo- ry I discovered that the noble Red Man has been the most tractable and persist- ent’ obstruction to civilization, side- walks and sewers, and I suggest that the war council all be composed of chiefs and that each be christened in chinook as it seems most meet and proper. [hear hear!!] Weare all talkers. Of course none of you can talk like I can, so I will be christened the Quanison Wawa Ty- ee. Wawa meane talking: quanison means allthe time, and tyee means chief. (hear, hear!) Dr. Sinclair: Mr, Curtis, I do not think, sir, that you should do all the talking. I love to talk here because I know I won’t be hooted down like I am everywhere else. I think your euggest- ion a good one and like you I would se- lect my own name and be called Muck- a-muck Wawa Tyee,’’ and it was so or- dered. Muck-a-muck means chief cook or commisary. Goodeve Bros. had been as uneasy aa if he had been sitting ona pin, and as the Muck-a-muck Wawa Tyee stopped to get his second wind, he sprang to his feet and said: °“‘Oh, that I could recall the words of our brother, Quanison Wa- wa Tyee, but the night is growing apace so I will without further ado [for 1 ama man of few words] select my name. I do solemnly swear that I will never agree with Mayor Scott, the city council or the Evening Recorp, and_will kick at anything and everything they all do. Wm. Martin and J. Ferguson McCrae desire to withdraw from this push. What is the pleasure of the Tyees?” “No, no! they never can, they are kicking at least.’’ Not while to did not seam to set'well with the great chiefs for each of them yearns to be the the next mayor, alderman, dogcatcher or something. “Ag I was saying,’? continued Good- eve Bros., ‘“‘I am the big ’un of you all, and therefore name myself Skookum Wawa Tyees and while I am at it I would suggest that Alderman Johnson be called Tenas Wawa Tyee,” , “What does Tenas mean,” cried John- aon. “©, that means little,” replied Smith Curtfs, and I thank Goodeve Bros., for making so apple pie—I-I mean apropos suggestion.’”” Mr. Johneon protested but all in vain for he was dubbed Tenas Wawa Tyee. In a feeble voice he said: ‘‘HaveI not been a traitor in the camp of the ene- emg? . Did I not tell the mayor and the council that I was for the bylaws when I was pledged to brethen against them?” “Yes, yes,” came froma dozen throats “and that is why wecall you Tenas”-and it so came to pass. PRINTING TO BE LET BY TENDERS Engineer Instructed to Run. Street Lines---Money Bylaws Finally Adopted. City Without one dissenting vote the city council last evening turned down the Miner and recognized the Recozp. Al- derman Johnson and Wallace were op- posed to letting the Recozrp bid at all for the city printing, but the other ald- ermen convinced them that euch action outraged the British spirit of fair play and they consented to vote for the mo- tion to let all city printing by tender. Ald. Fraser brought the matter np by rising to a question of privilege. ‘‘The other night at the meeting,” said he, ‘the Miner reporter here, made more noise than any one in the meeting. He had to get a new pair of boots, he kicked so much. How in the world can you expect a paper to give a fair and impar- tial report of the news, whose reporter shows himeelf to be so vindictive and prejudiced. Such gutter anipe p ings are in keeping with the policy of his paper. Don’t forget to write that down, sir,’’ Fraser said, turning to the re- porter. “The Miner,’” continued he, ‘‘never did this city any good. It has worked against the best interests of the city and endeavored to injure its credit and good name. Therefore I move that the city printing be withdrawn from that paper.” “Those are my sentiments exactly,” said Alderman McPherson, ‘‘and I sec ond the motion.” Johnson and Wallace opposed the motion. “Gentleman,” said. Mr. “This discussion is a aspect. Such a thing is nnfortanate in the council assembly. -I am no particu- lar friend of the Recorp, and have op- posed it on several occasions, but there is that feeling within me which calls out the apirit of British fair play. Mr. Smith established the Recorp un- der great difficulties ‘and has invested all his money here and pays taxes. He came here to make a living, he works for the interest of the town and why not give him an equal show with the other papers. Let him compete in the open market for the printing and take his chances with the rest. It is petty and foolish to heap trouble upon a man be- cause he is in trouble himself. Now gentlemen let us have British fair play, let Ald. Fraser withdraw his motion against letting the printing to the Min- er and let Aldermen Wallace and Jobn- son withdraw their objections to barring the Recogp.” This was done by an un- animous vote. In compliance with a petition from Sheriff W.J. Robinson, the board of works wasempowered to instruct the city engineer to run certain street lines.
