CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 9, 1980 Dear Ann Landers: | have enjoyed your column for years and want to give something In return. This article by Thomas P. Malone. , M.D., appeared in Guldeposts. | hope you like it and that you will share it your readers. — L.V.J. Of Nashville Dear L.V.d.: It's a gem, and | am delighted to run it in the column. Thank you. ALL ABOUT LOVE In my practice at the Atlanta Psychiatric Clinic people sometimes ask me what this psychiatric stuff is all about. It has become clear that almost all emotional problems could be summed up in one particular bit of behavior — a person walking around screaming, ‘‘For God's sake, love me!'’ He goes through a million different manipulations to get someone to love him. , And that’s the core of most emotional sickness. Healthy people are looking around for someone to love. And if you see changes In the people who are screaming, ‘‘Love me, love mel’’ it’s when they realize that if they give up screaming and go to the business of loving another human, they will get the love they've been screaming for all their lives. It’s a hard lesson to learn, but life gets a lot, better once you learn It. Sterilization is Said Decade Phenomenon Voluntary sterilization is the contraceptive phenomenon of the decade, said a World- watch Institute report. The nonprofit research group said the number of couples using sterilization to prevent pregnancy now ex- ceeds the number using any other single preventive family- planning measure. In a report, the institute estimated that 240 million couples around the world use one form or another of contra- ception, but said more than 300 million couples have, been passed by the ‘contraceptive revolution. “For these men and wo- men, the decision of whether and when to have a child is seldom a real decision at all, but a fumbling exercise of out- dated, frequently futile .and tion required major abdominal surgery, general anesthesia and several days of hospitali- zation. Stokes said surgical meth- ods for female sterilization have been greatly simplified in re- cent years and have surpassed vasectomies in popularity in the US. : “Especially indeveloping countries, where medically- trained personnel are at a premium, the advent of simpli- fied procedures means that sterilization can be moved out of the hospitals and into the villages,” the report said. Special Space Hat Allows Youngster With Rare Disease to Play Outdoors A five-year-old boy in Car- michael, Calif. with a raro disease can play outdoors again, thanks to a specially- developed space helmet. Jared Reisman has an allergy to airborne particles so strong that even a few minutes outdoors can turn him blue and leave him unconscious, Allergies have been pin- pointed as the cause of the problem, but doctors have been unable to explain why Jared's reactions are so severe. Dr. Charles May, a leading immunologist at the National Jowish Hospital in Denver, ts scheduled to see Jared this summer. Meanwhile, Jared’s father, chemical engincer Barry Rels- man, and two engineers at the Lawrence Livermore Labora- tory have developed a helmet for Jared to wear to protect him from his allergies. The helmet is attached by & corrugated tube to an air | purifier he wears on his back. The symptoms of the aller- gy first appeared when Jared was 18 months old. Spider is a distinctly New York band with geographical roots in three continents and musical roots extending from jazz to straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll, At one time or another, various members of the group have studied at the prestigious New England Con- servatory of Music and Berk- fee School of Music, and have performed in countless rock clubs from Capetown, South | Africa to New York City. The origins of the pand are traceable to South Africa, the native country of Amanda, Keith and Anton. The three were musically involved as early as 1969 in a short-lived band called Hammak. The group played in focal Cape- town ‘clubs and disbanded when Anton went off to New fngland Conservatory of Mu- sic, Keith to the Berklee College of Music, Boston, and Amanda to the more promis- ing musical environs of Lon- don. The¥ remained in close- contact over the ensuing years and by the mid-70’'s, Keith and Amanda and Anton relocated to New York. * Elsewhere’ in the United States.
